Made in Brooklyn: the creatives putting the New York borough on the design map

Text: Dominic Lutyens

Brooklyn is only a short distance from Manhattan yet it has its own, highly distinctive identity. Talk to Brooklyn’s tight-knit but burgeoning community of designer-makers and you get the impression that this New York borough is widely seen as more romantic, bohemian, less overtly worldly than the more commerce-focused Manhattan. Yet it’s also easy to exaggerate the differences between these two creative hubs. After all, Brooklyn’s new generation of designers are, in their own way, highly ambitious and entrepreneurial. Even so, the ethos of their businesses is more leftfield, possibly more laid-back than those of Manhattan.

Brooklyn Bridge

Comparatively leafy Brooklyn is generally seen as a gentler place, albeit one teeming, like never before, with industrious creatives working in a multitude of fields. ‘Brooklyn has an energy that springs from all types of talented people,’ say Jean and Oliver Pelle, who, in 2011, set up their lighting and furniture design studio Pelle in Red Hook, western Brooklyn, a port area that boasts a high concentration of designers. ‘There’s a big entrepreneurial spirit, a groundswell of activity in one spot – designers, restaurateurs, beekeepers making honey on rooftops.’

‘There are all kinds of industries here,’ concur Jason Horvath and Bill Hilgendorf of design studio Uhuru, which is ‘dedicated to sustainability and local craftsmanship’. Its Coney Island furniture is fashioned from the eponymous Brooklyn peninsula’s demolished, weathered boardwalk, originally installed in the 40s. ‘People are brewing beer, designing wallpaper, lighting, you name it... It’s amazing.’ There are many advantages to being Brooklyn-based, many designers point out. For starters, there’s its strong community spirit: many creatives know each other, help each other out and sometimes collaborate.

Welcome to the German Design Award 2016 - the international premium prize of the German Design Council. Its goal: discovering, presenting and awarding unique design trends. Every year, top-quality submissions from product and communications design are awarded, all of which are in their own way ground-breaking in the global design landscape.
An international expert panel is exclusively engaged with all nominations. Intensive tests, checks and discussions take place before the announcement is made: And the Winner is…

Architonic Trend Analysis: North American Design Brands

North America. It may be the new world to some but Architonic's latest installment in its ongoing Architonic Trend Analysis series – North American Design Brands 2014–2015 – reveals a ranking headed up by a number of manufacturers with longevity.

In at number one is that major player on the stage of 20th-century design history, Knoll, which was founded just before the Second World War. It's followed by another big-hitting US brand, Haworth (eight out of the ten brands are American, the other two Canadian), this time established in 1901. In third position comes Emeco, which launched in 1944 but has experienced major growth since the 1990s, when it moved to address its 'Navy Chair''s dropping sales.

But it's a tale of two cities. Or two eras, rather. Canadian lighting designer Omer Abel's Bocci label, occupying fourth place, was founded just ten years ago, with Kevin Reilly lighting, Molo, Bassam Fellows and Skram, who all make the top-ten cut, also launched since the turn of the millennium.

North American success in the Middle East

It’s a surprising match; Vin De Garde, the North American manufacturer of custom-built wine cellars and Downtown Design, the Middle East’s only curated trade fair for original, high-quality design. The pioneering brand forged unprecedented success by tapping into the opportunity-rich city of Dubai, where, as exhibitors of Downtown Design, they were able to showcase their unique product, meet key buyers and secure new contracts as part of the region’s development boom.
