Tally ho!

London is a city abuzz with creativity year round, but September is definitely when its design heart beats the loudest. From 15–23 September, the London Design Festival will welcome visitors from more than 75 countries and greet them with an extensive programme of landmark projects and commissions, forums and more.

Helping to form this epicentre of design are some of the top industry trade fairs and events for architects and planners – 100% Design, designjunction and the London Design Fair, showcasing hundreds of home-grown and international design brands.

Beyond the fair, more inspiration can be found at the Royal Academy of Arts. Their ‘Renzo Piano: The Art of Making Buildings’ exhibition is the first in London in over 30 years to highlight the renowned architect's prolific body of work.

designjunction, now in its eighth year, will transport to London’s South Bank 20-23 September with a specially curated programme of exhibitions, installations, retail experiences, talks and workshops across three key locations.

The Doon Street site, the largest super-structure ever built by designjunction, will house 200 international design brands showcasing new products including Vitra, Caesarstone, Icons of Denmark, Flos, Northern, Norr11, Resident, New Tendency, Bethan Gray, Petite Friture and many more. The Riverside Walkway will showcase a series of outdoor installations including Head Above Water – a 9-metre sculpture of a head which supports mental health campaign Time to Change. Oxo Tower Wharf and Bargehouse will host major brand activations and exhibitions.

designjunction is set to have a truly inspiring talks programme, where they will explore their theme. Moving away from standardised names of the design and architecture industries, they are proud to break the mould of the ego-driven talks programme by hosting discussions about what truly matters. With one of the keynotes from the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and the other from Benjamin Hubert, #designevery talks celebrate inclusivity whilst exploring the crucial issues which the design industry faces.

London Design Fair
Text: London Design Fair
Launched in 2007, the London Design Fair has earned itself the reputation as the go-to trade show during the annual London Design Festival, hosting the single largest collection of international exhibitions, designers, brands, country pavilions, features and galleries throughout. Each year, over 28,000 influential retail buyers, producers, architects, designers, interior designers, press and the design-savvy public, attend to see the very latest in furniture, lighting, textiles, materials and conceptual installations, from over 36 countries. Highlights this year include:

Material of the Year: Plastic, Beyond the Chipper
Never one to shy away from a controversial issue, for 2018 we cast the spotlight on a material that is loathed by many: Plastic. Culminating in an exhibition at the fair titled ‘Beyond the Chipper’ we will be looking at four designers who are repurposing plastic in ever inventive and valuable ways.

Dutch Stuff:
Following its debut in 2017 the exhibition and home of Dutch design during the festival returns. This year focusing on a more refined selection of 30 designers we welcome, Earnest Studio, Bart Joachim Van Unden, REM Atelier, Martijn Righters to an already impressive line-up.

Swedish Design Pavilion:
The annual showcase for Swedish designers, studios and companies will this year host 13 forward-looking, young and designers from across Sweden in a show-stopping pavilion sponsored by Swedish Wood.
