Expanding spending

Despite the global socio-economic turbulence of 2020 – which has continued, with all its disruption, into this year – China, ironically one might say, reported an annual GDP growth of 2.3%. Its National Bureau of Statistics even put economic expansion in Q4 at a sizeable 6%. A robust recovery, you might say.

What's less rosy is the consumer-spending picture, which was apparently down 3.9%, year on year. What might encourage shoppers to part with their hard-earned cash with greater enthusiasm?
