Wind and Shade

The autumn trade fair season began earlier this month with Maison&Objet in Paris. If you weren’t able to get to the French metropolis, you can have a look at the latest trends by going to Architonic Facebook. We’ve documented all the new developments for you there in the form of photo tours.

We’ll also be on location for you at the London Design Festival, running until 27 September, and Cersaie 2015, running from 28 September until 2 October. For both fairs, we’ve put together our tried and trusted Architonic Guides to help you efficiently plan and prepare your visits.

Shortly before colder temperatures return to our latitudes, our current feature article takes a look at natural means of cooling buildings – techniques which, incidentally, are also used in northern climes.

Contents in brief:

  • Event Agenda October 2015
  • The Heat is Off: natural cooling in architecture
  • Architonic Photo Tours: Maison&Objet 2015
  • Further Articles from Architonic’s ‘News & Trends’

The Heat is Off: natural cooling in architecture

Text: Katharina Sommer

Long before the advent of air-conditioning, lo-tech means of cooling buildings were well established. Now, architects worldwide are rediscovering the sustainable benefits of natural temperature control through clever design.

Spending a summer in southern climes, one learns quickly how the holiday house can be kept comfortable despite high daytime temperatures: closed shutters shield the rooms from overheating during the day, and cross-ventilation cools them at night. This simple principle of cooling by means of natural ventilation and protection from the sun can be incorporated at the architectural design level and optimised through structural measures and greening, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for additional mechanical cooling systems.

Some sites even allow open roof and wall constructions. When the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron were commissioned to design a sport and multifunctional centre in Natal, Brazil, they took advantage of the mild tropical climate and the coastal setting to employ such a concept. The building, completed in 2014, is part of the larger-scale town-planning project ‘Urban Vision for Mãe Luiza’. The new gathering place is intended to set in motion an upgrading of the favela Mãe Luiza.

Pedrali furnishes restaurant at Milan Nestlé headquarters

Pedrali has provided the furniture for a restaurant within the new Milan headquarters for food company Nestlé. Designed by DEGW Italia, the interior of the headquarters is intended to provide staff with a flexible working environment. Pedrali's white Stylus tables and Laja armchairs have been used to furnish the VIP area. Helping to provide a minimalistic and clean-looking space, the armchairs are upholstered in white and grey with a chromed steel frame. Stools and chairs from the Kuadra collection are located in the lounge area. The plastic shell and chromed steel frame are designed to make the seats flexible and scratch-resistant.

Material Tendencies N° 4: Sebastian Herkner

The young German designer’s extraordinary feel for material and colour combinations allows him to bring out the value and character of different materials. In doing so, he marries - often in collaboration with traditional manufacturers – classic handcraft with modern production techniques.

Architonic spoke with Sebastian Herkner about materials and their colours.

I would probably opt for glass. I like traditional, high-quality materials and glass is just super-exciting and highly versatile. The process itself is fascinating and I’m attracted by the wide range of processing techniques. Glass can be cast, blown or pressed. It’s relatively easy to produce a mould and achieve a result rather quickly, depending on how long it takes to cool. And there are always surprises as well. Glass has an almost mysterious character of its very own.
