Going up in the world

Jealousy is a motherf**ker, as one of my colleagues often likes to say.

Yes, we're all striving for inner peace, but it ain't easy – or easy to hold onto, if you do ma
nage to achieve it. Coveting other people's accomplishments or accoutrements has a nasty habit of destabilising us. Take a recent trip I made to the Swiss Alpine resort town of Klosters, to stay at a friend's weekend getaway. Expressive architecture and advanced construction techniques have transformed mountain homes from solitary retreats into uber-comfortable residences – and with it created a whole new landscape for aspiration. As soon as one switches the luminaire on, the apparently void space within the frame of the luminaire turns, as if by sorcery, into a perfectly illuminating surface – A magical and scenographic element that interacts with its surroundings and, turned off, frames perspectives and details of a given space.

House in Ashiya by Kazunori Fujimoto Architect & Associates
Photo: Kazunori Fujimoto

Located at the foot of Mt. Rokko – a popular spot for sightseers – House in Ashiya is blessed with the green scenery of the mountain. The house's strong geometrical composition helps maintain its spatial purity while the concrete spiral staircase gives softness to rigid space and symbolises unity in this family house.
