FAST FORWARD

In the increasingly digitalised world we inhabit, architects and engineers have come to rely on software as much as physical tools for planning and building. And with the continued uptake of BIM in Switzerland, it seems fitting that this year's edition of Swissbau, Europe's major trade-fair biennale for the construction sector should ask not What will we build in the future?, but rather How will we build it?

Manufacturers and researchers will present practical answers to this and other questions at the Swissbau Innovation Lab – just one of the special features, along with installations, exhibitions and lectures, planned for the 2018 fair.

Technophile or not, we hope to see you there.

P.S. Looking to jumpstart your fair planning? Why not download our Swissbau guide?

More than half of the geographical area of our country is made up of Alpine and pre-Alpine landscape. These regions are unique and represent an essential component of Swiss identity. Many parts of them, however, are suffering from a serious lack of future prospects.

Global warming is presenting winter tourism with massive challenges and at the same time increasing the risk of natural hazards. Many communities are also struggling with population loss and its extensive consequences. The speakers are Mario Botta (architect), Damian Jerjen (Director of the Canton of Valais Office for Spatial Development) and Daniel Müller-Jentsch (Senior Fellow Avenir Suisse). Swissbau Focus. The event and network platform. Hall 1.0 South. Wednesday, 17 January 2018, 16:00 to 17:00.

The country's historically most important building, the Bundeshaus (House of Parliament), is being reconstructed to meet the requirements of digitalisation and modern building infrastructure. A matching digital scenario is being implemented at Swissbau Innovation Lab, the special exhibition on digital transformation.

In the iRoom, which was designed especially for the Swissbau Innovation Lab, visitors can immerse themselves in a digital experience world and – using the new parliament building as an imaginary application – learn how buildings will be planned, constructed, used and managed in the near future.

Material availability and faculty are quantifiable factors in defining architects’ and designers’ material choices, when based on physical, economical and practical rationales.

Material advancements, trends and tendencies, on the other hand, define a design’s cultural currency. Architects’ and designers’ material choices, in this regard, can have long-lasting ramifications, and understanding the rationales behind these choices is often challenging.
