The UK government announced last summer that it was to set up an inquiry into the impact that early-years education has on children's overall life chances. Such an undertaking in and of itself clearly signposts that there's a relation between equal access to quality nursery schooling and social enfranchisement and opportunity for all.

But what role architecture? Kindergarten projects may be designed for diminutive users, but, as a recent crop of them show, their social and educational ambitions are anything but small.
