We mark the forthcoming edition of ISH Frankfurt - which runs from 10 to 14 March - with a lead article that surveys the best of recent spa and wellness destinations internationally - 'In Rude Health: New Wellness Projects'.

In the course of its 50-year history, ISH has continuously enlarged its focus, becoming a showcase for water and energy in combined applications. Apart from innovative bathroom design, the fair covers building utilities engineering as well as energy and climate technology, which enables it to bring together a host of pioneering technological solutions for buildings. Architonic Guide: ISH Frankfurt 2015

New faucet design for the bathroom

In KWC ZOE, the Swiss market leader KWC is offering a faucet range for exceptional bathrooms that clearly sets itself apart in terms of aesthetic appeal, functionality and quality. KWC ZOE's sculptural body and distinctive spout capture the dynamics of a natural spring and captivate hearts at first sight. It also boasts impressive functional and technological features. A 90° swivelling range allows users to keep their hands free and makes the faucet convenient and ergonomic to handle, while smart technology ensures a powerful yet gentle and continuous flow of water. KWC ZOE is also easy to clean thanks to its precise, virtually seamless surfaces and transitions. A premium faucet from KWC: Swiss Water Experience.

Architonic Trend Analysis: Sanitary Ware 2014

As the world's leading reference resource for premium-quality architectural and design products, Architonic offers a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in the architecture and design markets. Which were the most searched-for brands, designers and products in 2014? We're in the process of analysing last year's search queries as part of a detailed publication for the Architonic Community, and would like to present you with some initial extracts as part of our 'Architonic Trend Analysis' series.

To mark ISH, we have devised rankings for the 10 most frequently searched-for producers of bathroom fittings. The list is based on text-based searches for individual brands and, accordingly, reflects active brand awareness on the part of architects and interior architects. It only features those premium brands that are listed on architonic.com.

Swiss manufacturer Laufen, which heads up the top 10 most-researched premium sanitaryware brands via text search on architonic.com, together with Spanish manufacturer Roca at number 6, are exceptions. All the remaining positions are occupied by German and Italian brands. Whilst the Italian companies in the ranking have their origins in the second half of the 20th century, when Italian industry and design started to boom, most of the German manufacturers classified have their roots in the era of industrialisation and were founded in the 19th or early 20th centuries. What the top 10 brands have in common though is the fact that they all managed to establish their own clearly identifiable style with their premium product ranges.

You’ll find further interesting analyses on pages 12 and 13 of the Architonic Guide ISH Frankfurt 2015.

In Rude Health: New Wellness Projects

The word itself may have been coined relatively recently, but the ritual of 'wellness' – as a means of rejuvenating mind and body – has a long and healthy tradition. This hasn't, as a number of recent projects demonstrate, stopped a bevy of architects internationally from rethinking how we take to the waters. (Text by Simon Keane-Cowell)

The Fazenda Boa Vista spa, designed by Isay Weinfeld and located outside Sao Paulo, is defined by its long internal walls, which run the length of the building and on its exterior become a series of vertical wings

Wellness. Not the most elegant-sounding of words to the ears of a native English-speaker. But despite its somewhat awkward, neologistic ring (it’s fair to assume the term was coined as a counterpoint to the notion of ‘illness’), the practice itself of consciously attending to, and caring for, the body in order to effect emotional well-being has a long and healthy heritage. ‘Mens sana in corpore sano’ – a sound mind in a sound body – the Romans were in the habit of saying, understanding the dyadic relationship that exists between flesh and the spirit, long before we came to understand the power that endorphins have on busting stress and putting smiles on faces.

South African practice Metropolis Design’s Spa House, which overlooks Cape Town’s Hout Bay, gives the illusion of being suspended over its sizeable outdoor pool

While the word itself may lack elegance, a raft of recent wellness projects demonstrate the difference that careful consideration to the senses makes when planning a spa or sauna environment, and that’s before you’ve even hit the water.

We always choose our own paths – new ones

Our aim is to rethink and enhance everything, offering superior products for innovative bathroom solutions. At the ISH in Frankfurt, we will therefore present you not only with our latest bath and shower surface models. We will introduce an entirely new product segment. Working with renowned designers, we have designed washbasins made of high-quality KALDEWEI steel enamel. These perfectly complement our existing programme. And produce a harmonious overall composition in the bathroom thanks to the use of a single design language and material.

Visit us to experience our innovations live – at the ISH in hall 3.1, booth D79.

STARON® Hotel Bathroom without Barriers at BAU 2015

People with physical disabilities are dependent on buildings being designed in such a way that they provide disabled access. This principle has for the most part been applied in public facilities, even though there is still ground to make up in this respect. In hotels, on the other hand, the picture looks very different, and architect Ursula Fuss from Frankfurt, Germany, is therefore all the more pleased that Samsung Chemical Europe recently entrusted her with the challenge of designing a hotel bathroom with disabled access. (Text by Anna-Maria Wiede)
