'Wohin mit Mutti?' (Where to send Mum?) read the front-page headline of an issue of German magazine Stern back in the late 1980s. The accompanying image: a grey-haired old lady in a wheelchair, wrapped in brown paper and string, ready to be shipped off.

Cox Architecture
Photo: Shannon McGrath
Cox Architecture's Perth Children’s Hospital, Australia, is designed from a child's perspective with interiors marked by bright colours and organic shapes. Its playful atmosphere is underscored by the atrium at the heart of the hospital, whose suspended mobiles reflect sparkles of light throughout the space, providing a cascade of kinetic petals throughout the day.
