WHY DO YOU BUILD ME UP?

The clue is in the name. BAU – the big-top, international building-industry fair that takes place every two years in Munich  – is squarely aimed at professionals. Architects, planners, investors and others have been hitting the Bavarian capital in search of the latest and smartest materials, technologies and systems since 1964.

More than a just a trade show, BAU is also talking shop. This is where architects go to meet architects and discuss the future of building. This year's edition of BAU sees its respected 'Forum' series of expert presentations and debates focus on solutions for an increasingly complex world – everything from modular building systems and BIM to housing for refugees and timber architecture.

Constructive talks, for sure.

And why not ensure your time at BAU is spend constructively? Our Architonic Guide Bau München guarantees you'll get to where you need to be. Download it here.

N°32: JEANNE GANG

Shifting the focus of our ongoing Material Tendencies series to take in the perspective of the architect, Architonic recently met up with Jeanne Gang, founder of Chicago-based architecture and design firm Studio Gang.
Jeanne Gang: I really like wood. It can be used in so many different ways and the engineering is getting better. There are a lot of advances in the use of wood, even for taller, bigger buildings.

BAU 2017 OFFERS AND SERVICES FOR ARCHITECTS
Text: BAU Messe München

BAU 2017—that’s 183,000 square meters of materials, technologies and systems, 25 soccer fields of state-of-the-art technology from the international building industry. On January 16 – 21, 2017, over 2,000 exhibitors from more than 40 countries again present everything that’s applied in planning and building. Especially among architects from all over the globe, the world-leading trade fair BAU in Munich is regarded as an indispensable source of information and inspiration.

BAU’s universal, multidisciplinary approach makes it the industry’s most important meeting point for all those who are involved professionally in planning and building: from investors to planners and architects to tradespeople and building operators. Messe München, the organizer of BAU, is again expecting around 250,000 visitors; of these, probably about 70,000 will again be from abroad.

The 17 exhibition halls of BAU are arranged according to building materials and product and thematic areas. In addition, there are key themes which are newly specified for each BAU in consultation with the exhibiting industry. These are echoed in many different forms by most of the exhibitors and are also reflected in the BAU forums and special shows. The key themes of BAU 2017 are: intelligent facades; digital design, construction and management; smart buildings; and living and building 2020.

BAU is regarded as the world’s leading trade fair for architecture: for planners, architects and construction engineers from throughout the world, it is the number one information and communication platform. At no other event in the world is this visitor group represented in such numbers and so prominently too. For BAU 2015, 65,000 visitors came from architecture and planning offices—ten years before, the figure was just 25,000. Held in such high esteem among planners and architects, BAU has an absolutely unique selling proposition. And BAU 2017 again provides numerous offers specifically for architects.

BAU’s program of forums is geared primarily to architects and engineers. In the three forums of the fair (C2, A4 and B0), there are different daily topics that are oriented to the key themes. The variety of topics is huge: smart building materials, BIM, modular construction, easy tech—lowcost: these are only a few of the numerous topics to be reported on and discussed during the six days of the trade fair. The speakers in the forums are independent experts from all over the world, including representatives from well-known offices like Jean Nouvel, Paris; SOM, New York; Nikken Sekkei, Tokyo; David Chipperfield, Berlin; and KSP, Frankfurt.

BAU FORUMS: SOLUTIONS FOR THE FUTURE BUILDING
Text: BAU Messe München

Planning and building is becoming increasingly complex and more demanding. Globalization, digitalization, demographic change, urbanization, a lack of resources, the energy transition, energy and resource efficiency, recycling: The challenges facing the construction industry are so diverse that they can only be solved if everyone involved works together and by using new materials and technologies. Solutions for the future of building will be presented by experts from around the world in the BAU forums A4, C2 und B0.

FORUM A4: ARCHITECT AND INDUSTRY IN DIALOG

The forum in Hall A4 examines the role of the architect now and in the future. The forum has two parts. BAU is organizing the morning and afternoon sessions in cooperation with the architecture trade journals “XIA” and “AIT” as well as
the Association of German Interior Designers (BDIA). Every day between 11:00 and 14:00 there will be an exciting exchange on the latest hot topics between architects and manufacturers in the construction industry. Three speakers from internationally renowned architecture offices and three industry representatives will report on and discuss the latest developments and trends. The topics are diverse. They range from housing for refugees and immigrants and modular building systems and BIM to the construction capabilities of wood as a building material, utilization concepts for public buildings and efficient “easy, low-cost buildings.”

FORUM A4: DETAIL RESEARCH: BUILDING THE FUTURE

On six afternoons, the “Building the Future” Forum organized by DETAIL research will present practical international and interdisciplinary research projects for building the future. Prominent speakers will give insights into their research activities: What will the smart building of the future look like? What factors is the industry focusing on? What opportunities are there in existing structures? What future-oriented utilization concepts are there—for individual buildings as well as for the district, the city and the region? The facade is increasingly developing into a multifunctional building envelope. What opportunities are associated with the “thinking” facade system? Thanks to modern planning methods and innovative manufacturing techniques, system construction, which was barely acknowledged in the past, is experiencing a renaissance. What does “building for all” mean in a globalized world? And what prospects are digital planning opening up to the construction industry?

THE SPECIAL SHOWS AT BAU 2017
Text: BAU Messe München

As well as at the booths of the individual exhibitors, the key themes at BAU 2017 (Intelligent facades – Digital design, construction and management – Smart buildings – Living and Building 2020) will also be explored and explained in several special shows, from a range of different viewpoints and aspects. BAU is working closely with a number of high-profile partners in putting together this program. Here's an overview...

BUILDING 2020: FROM ENERGY EFFICIENCY TO PRODUCT EFFECTIVENESS

In its special show at BAU 2016, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen) takes up the key theme of Living and Building 2020, looking in particular at integrated concepts and product efficiency. A new EU directive requires that all new buildings must conform to the Nearly Zero Energy Standard. And that means energy efficiency throughout the production chain becomes a relevant sales argument also for manufacturers. Other sustainability aspects also come into focus, such as durability, amortization costs, recycling capability, convenience and a healthy environment. This special show sets out how such parameters can be consistently optimized.

FRAUNHOFER CITY LABORATORY
Buildings that respond to their users, that think in terms of energy efficiency and operate sustainability. Intelligent facades that positively influence the indoor climate and at the same time generate energy. Cities that do not produce either waste or sewage, thanks to a closed recycling and processing loop. These visions for the not-too-distant future will be presented at the special show “StadtLabor” by the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance. 14 Fraunhofer Institutes will showcase their latest R&D work on urban centers and answer visitors’ questions about the future of our cities.
