Thank goodness times have changed. In previous centuries, the miasma theory – which held that 'bad air' was responsible for such diseases as cholera and the plague – meant not only the wholesale closing of public-bathing facilities, but also the eschewal of washing and personal hygiene altogether. (The idea being that 'miasma' would enter the body when the pores were enlarged. Better to smell than be dead.)

Today, we cherish the role water plays in not only our physical health, but also our mental wellbeing, and acknowledge the central role architectural design plays in delivering the restorative benefits of it via experience-rich spas and thermal baths.
