The Swiss do it better

For setting alone, Zurich's go-to design biennale neue räume – now in its tenth edition – scores highly. The city's former ABB production halls serve as an über-industrial stage set for the fair, creating an intriguing architectural dialogue with new and familiar products from a raft of top Swiss and international brands.

Added value at this November's exhibition comes in the form of a series of specially curated shows with a particular emphasis on current and future home-living trends.

Scroll down for details on Architonic's drinks event at neue räume. Hope to see you there!

Mobiglias – Graubünden wants design
The exhibition based on the 'Mobiglias' design competition focuses on objects inspired by a tradition of local Graubunden design.
In the context of a public competition titled Graubünden wants
Design
, talented designers and schools submitted projects with a link to Graubünden. Participants were asked to present designs for everyday furnishings and objects for the home to be made essentially from local materials such as solid timber in particular, but also iron/steel and ceramics, leather and textiles. The winning designs were made as prototypes by members of the Mobiglias
Association and can be viewed in the special show of the same name.

Glamour – objects of desire
The ‘Glamour‘ anniversary exhibition showcases objects of desire – irresistible objects from all branches of design. Pictured: Knoll International, Diamond Chair 1952 by Harry Bertoia
Glamour: a special exhibition that forms the centrepiece of neue räume's tenth edition celebration

Visitors can look forward to a curated collection of fine furniture, lighting, textiles, accessories and everyday objects, all chosen for their capacity to add refinement, glitz and glamour. Shimmering fabrics, glossy surfaces and golden structures bear witness to an unusual, fascinating side of design. We are talking about objects of desire – irresistible objects from all areas of design with no claim to be functional or practical, about things which, whilst not necessary, add beauty to our lives with their brilliance. In a world of design that is dominated by a trend for clear, purist objects, one needs the occasional luxurious and dazzling exception.

Bauhaus – wonderhome
The special Bauhaus-Wonderhome show establishes a link with the centenary Bauhaus year. The mobile show apartment will be exhibited in a module inspired by the Bauhaus Dessau. Pictured: The Bauhaus for Mr and Mrs Everyone at 'neue räume 19'

Van Bo Le-Mentzel is a committed unconventional thinker. His latest project, a 16 m2 apartment, is a Tiny Foundation research project. It is designed as a mini home for two people. It can be expanded on a modular basis as required. The Wonderhome is the smallest module in a vision of the city titled Circular City, and is the successor of the 100 Euro Apartment prototype.

The mobile show apartment with Bauhaus facades, built especially for International Bauhaus Year 2019, is causing quite a stir. Furniture and lamps from the Bauhaus era will also be on display.
