The new exhibitionists

I once posted a couple of images of a then recently completed museum online and was upbraided by one particular commentator for not using photographs that showed its galleries full of exhibits. True, the pictures depicted – as is so often the case with architectural photography, with its tradition of fetishising empty, depopulated spaces – a vacuous museum building.

What the imagery did serve to underscore, however, was that museum architecture, more perhaps than any other building type, strives hard to be a spectacular object for visual consumption in itself – something to which the latest crop of projects from around the globe testify.
