Architectural lighting: light makes things visible and provides accents

A skilful blend of daylight and artificial light

As far as architectural lighting is concerned, the actual light source is receding further and further into the background. Thanks to tiny LEDs and planar OLEDs, lighting design has changed dramatically in the last few years. The LED itself is a point source, which, depending on the reflector and lens technology, can also be used to create a planar, antiglare light source. Organic LEDs, because of their low light output, short lifespan and high costs in comparison to LEDs, are not yet used on a large scale. The expected hype around this technology has not yet materialised, at least not yet. OLEDs, as planar light sources, will complement LEDs but in no way replace them.

Perfect harmony of design and technology

The desire for more comfortable working and living conditions is greater than ever. The demand for energy efficiency, security and convenience is growing at the same time. The increasing networking and digitalisation of electrical and electronic installations allows users to find individual solutions to suit their particular needs. This important aspect is highlighted centre stage at Light + Building, with its combination of both design and technology. They go hand in hand and it is not until they are combined into an innovative and ground-breaking integrated system that they bring modern buildings to life.

Light + Building 2016: classical aesthetic favourites meet futuristic technology

Light + Building is the platform when it comes to innovations around lighting and building automation. The exhibition period from 13 to 18 March 2016 is firmly rooted in the calendars of the visitors to see innovations and trends. With many new information and business partners as well as made orders, the view goes into a successful future. In addition to the product innovations of exhibitors, Light + Building also offers a comprehensive programme with special exhibitions that show the latest trends.

Winner of the Good Design Award 2015, Stupa, designed by Freshwest for Innermost, is pictured newly installed at the Yo! Sushi restaurant in Chelmsford, England.

Cast from resin, the individual pieces that make up Stupa are joined and hand-finished individually on a lathe, then polished with beeswax. This combination of a mass-production process with a high-value hand-skilled element makes for wonderful and interesting lighting; in this instance, the result is a lamp that permeates an ambient glowing warmth, while still providing a practical light level. The form was inspired by temple architecture in Asia, particularly the stupas of Myanmar.

Light + Building 2016: perfectly joined-up

Text by Ulrich Büttner

The eighth edition of Light + Building, from 13 to 18 March 2016, invites visitors to experience the worlds of lighting, design and networked building-services technology. The top-level themes are lighting-design trends, human-centric lighting, smart homes, smart powered buildings and security technology.

Technical design-oriented luminaires are concentrated on the floors of Hall 1. The neighbouring halls are dedicated to innovative technical luminaires

Light + Building, held biannually in Frankfurt am Main, will open its doors from 13 to 18 March 2016. The world’s leading trade fair for lighting, design, and networked building services technology again anticipates over 200,000 visitors. For the eighth time, it will welcome professionals from diverse industries as it affirms its pre-eminence in its field, with nearly 2,500 exhibitors and a wide range of target groups.

Light + Building is a challenge that visitors relish – especially architects and technical planners. Given the breadth of information presented, some advance planning is advisable, as simply meandering through the halls, while edifying, isn’t particularly expedient. The content of the fair is divided into three segments: Lighting, Electrical Engineering, and House and Building Automation. The fair’s motto for 2016 is “Where modern spaces come to life: digital – individual – networked.”

Five “Top Themes” facilitate orientation within the category offerings. In the area of lighting, these are: design trends in the luminaire market, and the human-light-health triangle (human-centric lighting). And in the area of networked building services technology: smart homes, smart powered buildings, and safety and security technology.

Material Tendencies N° 14:

Swedish design duo Front realise their fantasies by creating design objects that are often surprising and somewhat irritating at first sight.

Architonic met Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair 2016 to find out more about their passion for experimenting with different materials and discovering new technologies.

Anna Lindgren (right): I think it is interesting to find materials that are sort of outside the classic design world.

Sofia Lagerkvist (left): Yes, for example creating materials through bacteria or growing microbes – materials that come from somewhere completely different.
