Every now and then, something comes along that throws the proverbial cat among the pigeons. So radically discontinuous with the past, so confident in its complete newness, that it sends shockwaves through our society, changing the landscape forever.

So it was with the Bauhaus. It changed our social landscape by changing our literal landscape. We talk these days a lot about disruptive technologies or business models, that it's easy to forget just how paradigm-shifting the Weimar- and later Dessau-based art and design school was. A century on from its foundation, its modernist legacy continues to shape our built world and still feel new. Now, that's really something.

Another round: Thonet reissues the MR 515

To celebrate the Bauhaus centenary, Thonet has reissued the round MR 515 side table designed by Bauhaus luminary Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Hamburg-based Studio Besau Marguerre has subtly recast it in a contemporary way, rendering the crossing point of the legs more streamlined and enhancing its functionality with an optional shelf.

Sensitively modified, the table – now available in various sizes and with contrasting finishes – is destined to be a design classic for decades to come.

Holmen Industrial Area by Snøhetta
Photo: © Ketil Jacobsen
Snøhetta's design for the Holmen Industrial Area in Norway carefully considers its context. The colourful facility is organised in a simple rectangular shape that camouflages the in- and outgoing traffic, while the open space created by its large windows reduces the need for artificial lighting and heating, contributing to a better indoor climate and a more sustainable building.

Based in Israel, Pitsou Kedem Architects Studio was started in 2000 by Pitsou Kedem and now comprises eleven architects.
