Getting over it

There's something satisfyingly über-utilitarian about a bridge. It gets you from one point to another. But several recently completed bridge projects internationally demonstrate how this workaday construction type can also deliver serious regenerative effects to its surroundings, as well as function as a bold aesthetic or metaphoric statement.

We take a Calatrava-free look at a number of new crossings, which literally and figuratively elevate the experience of moving through the public realm. See you on the other side.

Get over yourself

Text: Alyn Griffith

Recent landmark bridge architecture shows how this most utilitarian of construction types, when imaginatively planned, can add real regenerative value to its environs. Build a bridge and get over it, people!

MXT Studio’s bright-orange steel bridge hovers above a motorway in Lisbon, providing a highly visible landmark within the neighbourhood. It features a tapered profile that accentuates the points where its multiple paths converge

The best bridges resolve issues of accessibility in efficient and often imaginative ways. They create physical connections that promote improvements to the infrastructure on either side, often helping to enliven previously under-performing areas. A survey of some recent examples reveals the regenerative effect intelligently designed bridges can have on a town or city’s public realm.

The Cirkelbroen bridge in Copenhagen was designed by artist Olafur Eliasson to carry pedestrians and cyclists across one of the city’s many canals. Rings housing LED lighting hang above its five intersecting circular platforms; photos Anders Sund Berg

The basic function of a bridge is to provide a crossing between two points: beyond this, its form is open to creative interpretation. When designing the Cirkelbroen bridge over Copenhagen’s Christianshavns Kanal, artist Olafur Eliasson drew inspiration from the area’s sailing heritage. The bridge comprises a series of five intersecting circular platforms, each with their own masts, to which steel cables resembling a ship’s rigging are attached. Rather than being arranged in a straight line, the platforms are offset to encourage a more circuitous route that allows users to slow down and enjoy different views of the city.

DESIGN DAYS DUBAI: VIENNESE GEMS IN SILVER

The small silversmith workshop Wiener Silber Manufactur shows an exquisite selection of its great silver design collection. Classics of the “Wiener Werkstätte” with works of Josef Hoffmann and Otto Prutscher are holding dialogue with contemporary objects from Zaha Hadid to Erwin Wurm and Ted Muehling. Ever since, the company sought to collaborate with the most talented and famous artists and designers of its time in order to create uncompromised, timeless tableware. In addition to the big names of design, Wiener Silber Manufactur is proud of its collaboration with young talents who give fresh impulses for the old material silver, such as Charlotte Talbot's sensual table collection “Landscape” made of a material mix of silver and gentle HI-MACs or Alexandre Echasseriau's impressive drinks cooler “Ice-Berg” in the shape of a bold Alpine scenery. To be seen at the Design Days Dubai, from 14 to 18 March 2016.

Material Tendencies N° 13: Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby

Established in 1996, British design duo Barber & Osgerby have worked across a variety of disciplines, including industrial design, interiors, architecture and site-specific installations.

As part of our ongoing Material Tendencies series, Architonic recently met up with Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair 2016. As this year's Guest of Honour, they showcased their recent works in the context of a wintery installation. As ever, we were eager to find out which material in particular they would choose if they had to restrict themselves to working with just one for the next three years...

Edward Barber (right): I think for me it would have to be solid wood. I find it has the most beautiful tactility and warmth and soul.

Jay Osgerby (left): Difficult! There are so many to choose from. Wood is just a small word for a huge genus of material. Either wood or aluminium. I think aluminium is a great material, because it does not degrade. You can use it again, again and again.
