So cool it's hot

Bright lights. Not so big city. Scandinavia's annual design big-top – the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair – might not be the largest of international shows, but its scale belies its high wattage. An architects' favourite, SFF charms with the quality of its exhibitors and a laid-back, Scandi pace that allows for meaningful and often spontaneous conversations.

Among the Nordic brands presenting their newest products were Kinnarps and Martela – two manufacturers known for their clever workplace solutions and commitment to sustainability – and go-to leather-manufacturing experts Elmo, who definitely know their stuff.

Blue in the face: Kinnarps’ new stained-ash colour collection

Stain. Not necessarily a word that conjures up positive connotations. Unless, that is, it's in the context of quality-first furniture and storage.

While daylight might have been at a premium in Stockholm in February, Kinnarps – the big-hitting workplace-solutions manufacturer – provided a bright new source of chromatic inspiration for architects and planners with the launch of its stained ash in 11 specially developed hues.

The result of a collaboration with leading architects and interior designers, the concept affords creatives even greater scope when it comes to using colour as an active space-shaping element, be it via contrast, tone on tone, or a resolutely monochromatic route.

All by myself: Martela’s new PodBooth

They’re a friendly lot, the Scandinavians.

That said, Finnish manufacturer Martela’s Pod family of designs for concentrated working or private discussion got a lot of attention at SFF, in particular its new PodBooth – a stand-alone, highly sculptural element for the workplace, with top-drawer, now-you-hear-it-now-you-don’t acoustic performance that allows its users to step out of the hectic, open-plan environment into an altogether more peaceful soundscape.

Designed by Henrik Kjellberg and Jon Lindström of o4i Design Studio, the PodBooth’s interior is soft and ergonomically designed, while its exterior, comprising two glazed sides and a shell specifiable in a range of differently colour fabrics or other materials, gives it a certain transparency and design-schematic compatibility respectively.

Skin deep: Elmo launches new colours

Swedish brand Elmo – experts in leather production – were also present at SFF in full living colour, while at the same time keeping it real. The chromatic expansion of their existing elmotique collection sees the addition of a number of new hues to their finest and thinnest of analine grain leathers, which, as ever, display their true nature with all the scars and insect bites you'd expect from an animal hide.

18 colours are now at the disposal of interior architects and others for their contract and residential products. Oh, and should you be wondering, we're talking full-blooded Swedish cattle.

Mooo. (Or should that be mu, as the local four-leggers say?)
