If ever there were a building type where the relation between architectural space and user wellbeing is writ large, it's the hospital or clinic. The stakes are high: ill-considered design – where levels of natural light or ventilation, for example, are sub-optimal – can have a direct impact on the effective treatment of illness.

The UK's network of Maggie's Centres, with their high-profile commissions, have become the poster child for how to inject health into the very fabric of architecture. Other projects internationally are following suit, however, helping to underscore the critical role holistic design has to play in holistic healthcare.
