neue räume, Zürich-Oerlikon

Big isn't necessarily good.

'Small and exclusive' is how neue räume (or 'new spaces') curator Stefan Zwicky describes Zurich's biennial design fair that has become a must-visit destination in the international trade-fair calendar. Known for its quality staging, the 2015 edition - which runs from 18 to 22 November - sees over 100 national and international manufacturers of both classic and new products take up temporary residence in the architectural grande dame that is the old ABB production hall in the city's Oerlikon district.

Architecture is placed firmly centre-stage this time round, with the fair's main theme 'Meuble - Immeuble' exploring the dynamic relation between furniture and interiors on the one hand and residential architecture on the other. Visitors will be also be treated to special shows and projects, in addition to the top-drawer brands who've been selected to exhibit.

All roads lead to Zurich in November...

The Architonic team will, once again, be on the ground at neue räume, ready to tell you about our latest services and special offers. We look forward to welcoming you to our Concept Space V at the fair’s entrance area – which, by the way, will be making its first full-size appearance in Switzerland at the Zurich fair.

Concept Space V is the result of a student competition organised jointly by Architonic and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, with the support of TRUMPF, the specialists in production technology. The award-winning design by Samuel Schumacher was produced in 2014 in cooperation with the Swiss sheet-metal-processing firm Meyer BlechTechnik and with GEMvision, the producer of innovative architectural film.

Together with Monkey 47 Gin and Gents Tonic Water, we invite you - from 6pm on the evening of 18 November - to drink a toast with us at Concept Space V to the first day of the fair. We look forward to meeting many familiar, as well as new, faces, and to lots of inspiring conversations.

On the Future of Design in Switzerland

Swissness, Swiss Design, Made in Switzerland...?

Text: Klaus Leuschel

The KTI project realised by the Product & Textile Research Group at the Hochschule Luzern; and OLED Design future technology developed by the OLED Design Lab were nominated for the Design Prize Switzerland

The awards ceremony for this year’s Design Prize Switzerland (Design Preis Schweiz) in Langenthal on 30 October will conclude the scheme’s 13th edition. Thanks to the ‘diversified competition structure’ (as the organisers put it), the current DPS has registered 450 entries in 12 award categories, 50 per cent more than the last time the competition was held (2013/14).

While in many industries today, a mere nomination is considered an award, this was by no means always the case. Though the number 13 might suggest otherwise, it must be said that the DPS has shed its pubescent scent of ‘teen spirit’ (Kurt Cobain). Launched in 1991, it has definitely grown up – something confirmed by the impressive quality of this year’s nominations. Please note: we can’t do without design!

Interview with Stefan Zwicky, the man behind the scenes

Stefan Zwicky

What highlights and special shows can visitors to neue räume 15 expect, what is the idea behind 'meuble - immeuble', or what makes Zurich the perfect place for a trade fair like neue räume? Stefan Zwicky answers all these important questions in an exclusive interview.

Focus: 'meuble – immeuble': residential architecture

Feldhäuser in Emmen

The projects and installations presented under the title ‘meuble – immeuble’ focus on the relationship between architecture and design. Space and interior design are interdependent: without ‘immeuble’ there is no ‘meuble’. When investing in a property or building, space-defining materials, ambience and the ability to furnish the space are important decision-making factors. Therefore, these aspects are already crucial during the planning phase. Four projects provide impressive examples of how this interdependency and the opportunities it provides are approached in practice:

Young Labels: The Next Generation

Plattenladen

For the third time, neue räume will provide a dedicated space to showcase young talent. However, the young designers and manufacturers shown in the Young Labels show are not total newcomers: extending over 250 square metres of floor space in the ABB Hall, the Young Label show will present names you are sure to hear a lot more from in the future. Visitors can look forward to a versatile range of promising and unexpected products.

neue räume in the city: Design in the Centre of Zurich

For the third time, the centre of Zurich will host the neue räume in the city initiative. First implemented in 2011, the cross-marketing idea has proved to be a major success. Hence this year’s event will be even larger than its predecessor: more than 20 selected shops from areas other than interior design, as well as cafés, bars and restaurants will show furniture, lighting and textiles by international manufacturers. The interior design objects will be showcased in shops, in windows, cafés, lounges, in courtyards and in further, rather unusual locations.

Material Tendencies N° 8: Tom Strala

Motivated by his love of research in the pursuit of the essence of matter, the trained Swiss architect Tom Strala probes the limits of various materials in the course of his experiments. His timeless objects conceived with attention to the tiniest details, his limited editions and his small production series of furniture and lamps bear witness to a philosophical approach to his work.

"I like to compare material with words or language. I can expressa great deal with words, but I can also express nothing by stringing certain words together. We have material, and we make something with it. I think every material has an incredible number of fascinating properties and processing possibilities that can bediscovered."

"Materials are literally waiting for someone to pick out a certain aspect and bring it to light. And that’s why I like all materials."
