For some years now, we've been hearing the clarion call when it comes to bricks-and-mortar stores: in the face of the rise of e-commerce, it's either adapt or die. Some retailers have successfully transitioned from mere points of sale to places of memorable and immersive brand experience. Others haven't. The latter have either bitten the dust or are finding it increasingly hot under the collar. Their shareholders, too.
 
Brands like Aesop – who have long understood the importance of investing in confident interior-architectural concepts for their retail spaces – prove how, if done right, the physical store can be a compelling marketing channel, just as powerful as any other form of content.

Kengo Kuma, the man behind such diverse projects as V&A Dundee and Mont-Blanc Base Camp, has also brought his versatility to bear in the realm of retail architecture. Born in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1954, he established Kengo Kuma & Associates in 1990 in Aoyama, Tokyo, and has been a professor at the University of Tokyo since 2009.
