Back to school?

Schools have become one of the most socially, politically and culturally charged battlegrounds during the Covid pandemic. Shutting them down is the easy bit. When and how to reopen them is an altogether more complex affair.

We all know that most children – particularly younger ones – can't socially distance. But beyond whether the design of schools can be modified to help minimise infection risk, a lively debate on the future shape of education is underway between parents, teaching unions, governments and the wider community. Now it's arrived, to what extent will online teaching be part of the mix? Will new physical school spaces be flexible enough to meet changing priorities? And what will their impact be on the environment?

After-school centre, Berlin, by Mono Architekten
Photo: Gregor Schmidt

Mono Architekten's After-school centre for the Waldorf  School in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, is docked onto the school building on the courtyard side and stretches like a chain of honeycomb structures towards the sports hall. The structure's green roofs achieve a sculptural appearance with the sloping in different directions of the wooden facades.
