You can’t have it all

And when it comes to Milan Design Week, you most certainly can’t see it all. A city at almost bursting point (this year’s edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano and Euroluce clocked up almost 400,000 design-hungry visitors alone) makes it impossible to cover as much ground as you’d ideally like. (Tip: Architonic’s trusty Fair Guides – developed by architects for architects – can definitely help!)

Among the brands showing out in Milan this month – and certainly not to be missed – were ZeitraumOcchioFredericia and Karl Andersson & Söner, each demonstrating in their own way how considered design, when married with quality materials and top-notch production and craftsmanship, makes for sustainable, space-shaping products. Che bello!

Natural highs: Zeitraum

German solid-wood-furniture specialists Zeitraum are at it again. With authenticity and sustainability front and centre, their latest trio of carefully crafted products are designed for durability and aesthetic permanence.

Designed by Klemens Grund for a variety of settings, the new, collapsible TAUT table is characterised by minimal dimensions: its thin table top is supported by formally reduced transverse frames. It’s both literally and visually light. The FRIDAY NIGHT bed, meanwhile, designed by Formstelle, marries textiles and wood, bringing the cosiness of upholstered furniture into the bedroom.

And the existing, Läufer & Keichel-designed Okito chair, with all its ergonomic smarts, now has a lighter cousin in the form of OKITO PLY, a veneered-plywood version, which weighs a mere three kilograms. Get stacking!

Telling you straight: Occhio

Munich-based, innovation-led lighting brand Occhio enthralled visitors to this year's Euroluce in Milan with the latest design to join its holistic, multifunctional luminaire system.

Called Mito linear (think of it as a straightening out of its highly successful, circular Mito light), this super-graphic luminaire marries an emphatically linear, rational form with sophisticated finishes, not to mention the advanced lighting technology for which Occhio has come to be known.

Available in floor, suspended and ceiling versions, it offers architects and planners an impressive flexibility in terms of specification for a range of settings across both residential and contract. Innovative features such as touchless control and color tune, meanwhile, ensure the “joy of use” that comes with Occhio.

Fluent Danish: Fredericia

Danish design brand Fredericia may have clocked up over a century in business, but it’s certainly not showing its age. In keeping with its tradition of delivering beautifully crafted furniture, developed in collaboration with internationally respected designers, the two latest additions to the family speak the language of Fredericia fluently – innovative design, crafted to last.

Cecilie Manz’s Post collection is an exercise in reduction. Consisting of a super-clean-lined table and chair, with a solid-wood frame, the products’ streamlined aesthetics offer visual levity without compromising on comfort: ideal for both contract and residential settings. Meanwhile, two additions to the super-upholstered Swoon series, designed by Space Copenhagen – a chair and a smaller version of the existing lounge chair – take the organic forms of mid-century modernism and give them a contemporary articulation.

Cool stylings: Karl Andersson & Söner

Made-in-Sweden furniture manufacturer Karl Andersson & Söner may have been in business since 1898, but its approach is anything but dated. Think simple, yet friendly, contemporary forms and natural materials, which embody the best of Scandi design.

New kids on the block at this year’s Salone del Mobile.Milano were its super-ergonomic Kaz stool and pleasingly geometric Part shelf. Designed by Nils-Ole Zib, Kaz comprises a shapely solid-seat, mounted on a finely drawn, steel-rod base, and is reminiscent of the functional form of the tractor seat. Part, meanwhile, is a modular shelving system, whose constituent parts are few and minimal. Designed by Pettersson Rudberg, it can be configured for a myriad uses and settings, working just as well as a single unit as it does across an entire wall.
