January + Basel = Swissbau

Where do you stand on technology? Are you a technophile or slower on the uptake, so to speak, when it comes to technological innovation? Is it a source of inspiration or perspiration for you? (At Architonic, naturally, we're a little bit biased.)

For architects, along came a piece of software decades ago and performed a creative and constructional sea-change in the industry of design and building. CAD is now almost universal, an indispensable tool for architectural professionals. But where does it all stop? Or should it stop? Does embracing technology mean a less human, less humane built environment?

'Technology to the rescue?' is the central question being thrashed out at the 2016 edition of the architecture, building and energy trade fair Swissbau in Basel. With it a raft of opinion-formers and decision-makers providing in-depth debate and analysis across a range of events, we think it's going to offer architects and other professionals some serious for thought.

So, bring your iPad. Or just a pad. You decide.

(And don't forget to pick up a copy of our Architonic Guide Swissbau Basel 2016 at the fair. Or download it from www.architonic.com from next week...)

Swissbau: the leading trade fair for architecture, building and energy

The next Swissbau is being held in Basel from 12 to 16 January 2016. Swissbau is one of the most important meeting points for professional visitors, and particularly architects, every two years when it comes to innovations, materials, events and networking in the building and architecture sectors.

The Swissbau Focus event format is being staged for the third time already under the patronage of the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA). This time the motto is "Technology to the rescue?" Representatives from the worlds of business and politics, the media, public authorities and education will be meeting up and discussing the current opportunities and challenges for the sector.

To what extent is state-of-the-art technology coming to our rescue? And where do we need to rescue ourselves from technology? The new technologies being used in construction work in Switzerland, and also technically oriented systems, wield a great deal of power. They are credited with being able to make their mark on the future – and particularly on building – in both a creative and rational manner. People rely on them. Yet, at the same time, technology imposes specifications, gives rise to requirements, places constraints on those who are building and restricts freedom and creativity. The motto of this year's Swiss Focus highlights technical developments in building and their impact on the future.

For the first time, ten different theme clusters will ensure you can gain a rapid overview of the events of interest to you. You will find the individual clusters under the following links.

The following four events feature amongst the highlights for the topics of architecture and planning: Opinion leaders and prominent architects discuss the challenges and the technical developments that will be confronting architecture in future.

Elegant solar façades to produce more electricity

Tuesday, 12 January 2016, 14.15 – 15.15

Photovoltaics have played a marginal role in Swiss architecture to date. The reasons for this are aesthetic reservations (only amongst architects – or amongst others too?). In view of the challenges that will be facing a densely populated country with the energy U-turn and climate change, it would, however, seem impossible to get by without incorporating this technology in our built environment. In order to boost the use of architecture-integrated photovoltaics, the CC EASE at Lucerne University is developing new photovoltaic panel designs that will fit in well on façades too.

Dipl.-Ing. Lars Grobe and Dipl.-Ing. Ran Xu at Lucerne University's Competence Center for Envelopes and Solar Energy (CC EASE) will be presenting their current projects and research on the topics of solar façades and daylight utilisation, together with their benefits in architecture.

Future Forum: Architecture to the rescue

Wednesday, 13 January 2016, 09.45 – 11.15

Architecture creates the world that we constantly move around in: villages, cities, settlements and the rooms in which we spend our everyday lives. Architecture – both good and bad – touches us directly, we experience it physically. Architecture cannot get by without technology – but architecture puts technology in its place: as an indispensable tool that makes a great deal possible but does not create anything.

The Future Forum 2016, organised by the Federation of Swiss Architects (BSA/FAS), looks into the elementary aspects of architecture. Astrid Staufer and Thomas Hasler will be opening the Forum – followed by short lectures by prominent architects on the relationship between technology and architecture, true to the motto: "Architecture to the rescue!"

Lectures will be given by Matthias Heinz (pool architekten zürich), Roland Bernath and Benjamin Widmer (Bernath + Widmer Architects Zurich), Martin Rauch (Lehm Ton Erde Baukunst GmbH, Schlins), Céline Guibat (Mijongarchiitects, Sion) and Stéphanie Bender (2b stratégies urbaines concrètes, Lausanne)

How must we build today to ensure we love our buildings?

Wednesday, 13 January 2016, 17.45 – 19.30

Architecture is a discipline which can, and indeed must, reconcile many and varied demands. And it is architects who are called upon to meet the stringent requirements on both energy efficiency and aesthetics in the concepts, designs and construction of their buildings and thus gain the appreciation of the users. How can this be done?

From left: Walter Steinmann, Direktor Bundesamt für Energie; Armon Semadeni, Architekt; Gabriel Vetter, Slam-Poet

As the director of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, Walter Steinmann will be providing an introduction to the duties of the architect in the Energy Strategy 2050. Architect Armon Semadeni shows how he finds answers to the stringent and varied requirements in his work. With slam poet Gabriel Vetter, we are inviting an unconventional view of the topic from the outside and, afterwards, we will be discussing topical questions on the stage, together with other eminent architects.

Architecture lecture: Tec_Changes_ Architecture

Saturday, 16 January 2016, 10.00 – 12.00

Studio Smith/Allen

At the symposium being staged at Swissbau with architect and artist pair Smith/Allen from San Francisco, we ask ourselves how far architecture can rescue the world with technology. Or does architecture need to rescue itself from technology? Smith/Allen built the first house printed out of paper. The discussion regarding the relationship between architecture and technology is conducted taking the "cradle to cradle" approach to recycling. Chemist Michael Braungart developed this concept in the 1990s, postulating inter alia that construction products can either be fed back into biological cycles as biological nutrients or can be continually maintained in technical cycles as "technical nutrients".

Alongside the many events, the actual setting in which Swissbau Focus is held similarly constitutes a highlight. This captivates visitors through its unique architecture, uses a sustainable stand concept, puts the sector's opinion leaders in the right light and selectively facilitates exchanges of opinion between Switzerland's experts. The concept has been designed by architects Maurice Berrel, Berrel Berrel Kräutler, Zurich and Basel.

Inspiration Space: The new exhibition concept by Martin Heller

For the first time, we are inviting our visitors to embark on a journey of discovery into a fascinating world of materials, colours, shapes and technologies. The innovative exhibition concept has been developed in cooperation with Heller Enterprises, under the leadership of cultural entrepreneur Martin Heller. His team took an intensive look at the special industrial design of Hall 2.0 and, on the basis of this, developed the Inspiration Space that appeals to the visitors' emotions, while providing them with guidance at the same time. Heller was supported among others by Sergio Cavero who has made a name for himself way beyond the immediate region as curator of the Designers' Saturday in Langenthal.

Martin Heller                                                                Hall plan Hall 2.0 Inspiration Space

The result is an exhibition hall with an urbane character, in which the classical look of a trade fair is deliberately fragmented by numerous elements that liven it up. The aim is to break up the geometry of the hall with its long, straight aisles. As visitors proceed on their journey through the Inspiration Space they encounter experimentation areas artistically designed by the exhibitors. These so-called "teasers" are scattered randomly on the floors, walls and ceilings of Hall 2.0 and thus form a pathway of sorts through the exhibition. The idea is for this pathway to stimulate the visitors’ imagination and arouse their interest in the exhibitors, who, for once, have the opportunity to showcase their products outside their classical stands too. Apart from classical stands with offerings from the segments of floors, walls, ceilings, lighting and open fireplaces, visitors will come across stylistically designed food and relaxation zones located around the hall’s central courtyard. Here, they are invited to spend time in a space conducive to creative pauses and interesting encounters.

Further highlights are the new exhibition concept in the interior design section by eminent exhibition creator Martin Heller and the already established Kitchen and Bathroom Trends, which provide a unique overview of the latest designs and trends.
