Special Newsletter Kortrijk 2014

Architonic totem by Samuel Schumacher

This year’s Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium, will be taking place for the 24th time. From 17 to 26 October, more than 250 selected international brands with memorably designed stands will be presenting their products in the halls of Kortrijk Xpo, where they will be joined by about 100 newcomers. However, Interieur is more than just a trade fair. This painstakingly curated and always top-class design event, not satisfied with occupying just the Xpo site, will also enliven the city’s Buda Island.

British architect and publicist Joseph Grima will be responsible for the ambitious cultural programme. Five installations with SQM (Square Metre) labelling will spread across the Biennale locations, illustrating his slogan that "The Home Does Not Exist". With excellent timing, Lars Müller Publishers has simultaneously brought out a publication in several volumes entitled "SQM: The Quantified Home".

Marina Bautier, winner of the "Designer of the Year 2014" award, will be presenting her work for the MA brand in Hall 3, where all prizewinners from 2006 onwards will be showing their latest designs for individual companies.

Architonic, too, will be present on the Xpo site with three striking totems, and we will be distributing not only our highly coveted bags but also invitations to the Architonic Disco.

Architonic Disco Kortrijk

The ideal way to round off the second day of the fair is to sip a gin & tonic with finest Gents Tonic Water from Switzerland while DJ Rick Shiver plays his finest tunes in a very special location.

To celebrate the start of Biennale INTERIEUR 2014, Architonic is organising its now-legendary Architonic Disco within the ancient walls of a former church. This is the perfect opportunity to get together with colleagues, share initial impressions of the fair and exchange business cards.

Pick up your personal invitation at one of the Architonic totems, which you will find across the Xpo site.

MUSTIQUE

Gordon Guillaumier designed Mustique for Lema: a comfortable sofa, perfect for closed configurations, at best in the leather version, wide and elegant but essential and formal as well. Its name recalls the idea of a live and happy place, destined to relax and resting spirit holidays. A calibrated composition — a coplanar shape for seats and backs, while the arm is protruding at mid thickness from the base unit, standing out with a disrespectful but harmonious gap as well — offering a perfecly balanced design, a sort of neo-plastic composition where each unit is correctly placed and plays its role. Soft surface with rounded corners stand out for the additional high cushions, bent to follow the back.

Biennale INTERIEUR 2014 in the city

After your visit at Kortrijk Xpo, take the Interieur Shuttles in partnership with Audi for a short ride to the Biennale destinations in Kortrijk City and immerse yourself in the avant-garde of interior design. The city programme of the Biennale INTERIEUR 2014 will be a visually linked trail along the Buda Island in the heart of Kortrijk City, an inspirational route with young design talent, cultural installations and spaces of encounter.

Buda Factory

Several exhibitions will take place in the Buda Factory. One of the highlights is Ventura Interieur, based on the successful concept of Ventura Projects. This platform for avant-garde design, in partnership with Organisation in Design aims to show the Biennale audience the latest in contemporary design and in the broader cultural sectors related to the design scene.  This exhibition is an opportunity for young designers to showcase their designs in an architectural atmosphere.

Broelmuseum

Glithero will create an installation that will lead visitors on a mysterious but sublime journey around the Broelmuseum. In response to the changing function of the museum and the move of the museums artefacts, Glithero will explore the ephemerality of things and challenge visitors’ perception of objects in space.

Broel School

The Broel School has been closed for over a year now. As it will be demolished, the Biennale Interieur got the opportunity to use the school as an exhibition space. Several designers will use the Broel School to create site-specific installations. Joseph Grima, curator of the cultural programme will create SQM: The Quantified Home exhibition, a journey through the story of the home over the last 60 years. The Biennale Interieur also invited Designers Duos. Each Duo will transform a former classroom of 50m2 within the Broel School.

Interieur Bistro – Broel School

By the end of the day, you might want to eat or drink something in the specially created Interieur Bistro, a mutual design of the Belgian Designers of the Year. INTERIEUR 2014 puts a special focus on Belgian design and has invited all the Designer of the Year winners of the past 8 years to collaborate on a concept for the Interieur Bistro. This will take place at the Broel School, an exciting new city location. It will revolve around Belgian hospitality and offer a fine selection of top-quality Belgian food.

Buda Tower

On four nights during INTERIEUR 2014, the Kortrijk-based band GOOSE will invade four levels of the Buda Tower in the city and surprise the Interieur audience with a specially created design performance, which will unite various disciplines with the aim to surprise, question, confuse and inspire. De/ReConstruction will allow the audience to get close to GOOSE and to experience their music inside out, from the point of view of the musician.

Performance on 17-18-20-24 October.

Marina Bautier – Designer of the year 2014

The Brussels-based designer Marina Bautier is "Designer of the Year 2014". She is honoured for her discrete, elegant furniture and for her entrepreneurship.

She designed for Belgian and international labels such as Swedese, Ligne Roset and Stattmann Neue Moebel. In 2013 Bautier launched her own label and showroom called MA. Inspired by Scandinavia and Asia, she creates functional but elegant no-frills furniture and has a soft spot for working with pale wood.

Apart from her particular less-is-more style, the jury was impressed with her audacity to start a label and the fact that her designs are produced in Belgium at accessible prices. The "Designer of the Year" award is an initiative by the Biennale Interieur npo and the magazines Weekend Knack and Le Vif Weekend.
