Is this who we are?

If you haven't read London Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic's book on the rhetorical meaning of our built environment – The Edifice Complex (2005) – then I'd highly recommend it. Beyond its programmatic function, architecture can be leveraged to delivering powerful narratives about those who commission or own it, and those who use it.

What does government architecture say about who we are, who we want to be and what we believe in? In these times of increasing disinformation, do such buildings speak the truth? And how does public architecture at a local level in the form of town halls and civic centres serve to create a sense of place and community identity?

Pillars of the community: government architecture

Public architecture comes in many different shapes, sizes and forms – ranging from the grandiose, through the dull and functional, to the unwelcoming and even intimidating. At its best, however, it should reflect the place and people it was designed to represent.

Delft city hall and train station by Mecanoo
Photo: © Mecanoo Architecten
Mecanoo’s idea was to design a station that makes it clear to visitors that they have arrived in Delft. The station, in combination with the new city hall, sits atop a new train tunnel built in place of the old concrete viaduct that had divided the city in two since 1965. Coming up the escalators, the impressive ceiling with the historic map of Delft unfolds.

The Tyree Energy Technologies building is part of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. With a design from the architecture studio FJMT Sydney (Mathew Todd & Janine Deshon), this impressive building is covered with Tempio's ventilated facade – combining FKL2-16 tiles on most of the building, with the oval baguettes on the windows, all in a natural red colour. It took more than a year to develop these special pieces, with which the building acquired its unique personality.
