Constructive thinking

Stories of students trapped in university accommodation blocks due to Covid restrictions, with care packages of dried noodles and biscuits being left in front of their doors to keep body and soul together, may still be fresh in the mind, but attention is now focused on what third-level education will look like in a post-pandemic age.

Recent university builds remind us of the critical importance of inspiring physical spaces for real-time, face-to-face learning and the unfettered exchange of ideas.

Pioneering spirit

Having recently picked up a coveted German Sustainability Award in the Pioneers category in recognition of its Furniture Footprint concept, Bavarian wood-furniture specialist Zeitraum continues to show the way with a manufacturing philosophy that not only encompasses ecology, but also economic and social responsibility. And don’t forget great design, too...

Designed by Formstelle’s Claudia Kleine and Jörg Kürschner, the new Kuyu lounge tabletop sits on a trio of African-mask-inspired legs and comes in a variety of woods, shapes and finishes, as well as two different heights, so can be combined and overlapped to create unique, engaging formations.

The Britta Nehrdich-designed Eclair bed, meanwhile, boasts a pared-down minimalist form that seems to float on air. Its gently rounded contours present a tangible feeling of softness, while its upholstered headrest offers comfort and support whether lying down or sitting up.
