N°18: KARIM RASHID

Whether it is a space, product, fashion item or an ornamentation, Karim Rashid’s work is very distinctive: an ultra-bright empire of colour and organic shapes.

The New York-based designer and architect spoke to Architonic about his democratic choice of materials, giving us a small glimpse into his versatile world of interests.

 
Karim Rashid: It would be really nice to do some experimentations with this kind of Nano-driven liquid crystal polymer – a material that is not really out yet. The only issue is that the cost is so exorbitant; it definitely is not very democratic at this point.

ICFF 2016

The 28th annual ICFF, North America’s platform for global design, will map the newest frontier of what’s best and what’s next in New York City at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from May 14-17, 2016. This year’s show will feature an expanded exhibition space, the ASID at ICFF education series, and four days of insightful show floor programming.
 
Over 750+ Exhibitors

The vibrant 165,000 net sq. ft. show floor will feature over 750 exhibitors displaying classic and contemporary furniture, seating, carpet and flooring, lighting, outdoor furniture, materials, wall coverings, accessories, kitchen and bath, and textiles for residential and commercial interiors. Fritz Hansen, Material ConneXion, Inc., Tom Dixon, Wilson Art, and Louis Poulsen are only a few exhibitors that make up this year’s list.

DON´T MISS: DESIGNJUNCTION + DWELL ON DESIGN

Visit New York’s most exciting design destination during NYCxDesign. Expect to discover 20 international design brands, one co-working pop up, a leading talks programme and vibrant café – serving complimentary espresso to every visitor.
 
The warehouse-style venue, ArtBeam in Chelsea, will play home to 20 cutting-edge brands curated by the team at designjunction, as well as a captivating talks programme created by Amanda Dameron, editor-in-chief at Dwell magazine. Highlight brands joining the line-up include Artek, Dyke & Dean, Iota, Muuto, Haberdashery, Cuero Design, AARA and Melin Tregwynt. The three day talks programme features some of the industry's most respected names, including legendary illustrator Bob Gill, Head of Research at IKEA, Mikael Ydholm, and executive director of Open House New York, Gregory Wessner.  
 
designjunction + Dwell on Design will also become the temporary networking hub for the design and architecture community. WeWork, the archetypal co-working space, brings a pop-up workspace furnished by Muuto and complete with free wifi. In addition, Italian coffee specialists illy collaborate with Artek and Vitra to present a vibrant café for guests to re-charge and relax.

WANTEDDESIGN at NYCxDESIGN

With its two marquee events during NYCxDESIGN in May, WantedDesign is a platform dedicated to promoting design and fostering the international creative community at large throughout the year. In 2016, WantedDesign is proud to present engaging content in Manhattan (May 13–16) and in Brooklyn at Industry City (May 7–17). 
 
WantedDesign Manhattan is home to the American Design Honors, which recognizes the work of talented young American designers who demonstrate outstanding creative and entrepreneurial skill. The work of 2016 winner Steven Haulenbeek will be on view. In addition, you can check out numerous international design pavilions, the Launch Pad – a destination for more than 30 independent designers and small companies who are seeking a manufacturer for their new products – and a daily conversation series, a great opportunity to discuss current issues in the design world.
 
Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, features the Design Schools Workshop, which welcomes a group of students from around the world to collaborate around the theme of #Playfulness, the Industry City Store by WantedDesign, which offers for sale the work of iconic and emerging designers, and Outside the Box, an exhibition of works from 11 cities across the US and Canada.

In partnership with Interior Design, Architonic will once again be hosting its speakeasy night on Sunday 15 May, from 9pm until 2am at Bar Naná in the Meatpacking District.
