Bricks-and-mortar retail spaces have known for some time now that they've got to offer shoppers more, if they're going to keep shifting stock and hold their own against the rise of e-commerce. In short, highly memorable, super-sensory, in-store brand experiences.

And yet it might be argued that we're seeing a shift towards oh-so-Instagrammable, physical retail projects that function primarily for their digital attractiveness – where their creative smarts and good looks ensure their shareability, and which, in turn, drives online sales. Kerching!

Wolford Amsterdam flagship by Studio Modijefsky
Photo: Maarten Willemstein
Inspired by the brand’s industrial heritage and craftsmanship, Studio Modijefsky set out to produce a luxurious retail concept for the new Wolford flagship store. Several bespoke elements were created for the interior, such as LED line lights that drop into low arches, hand-blown-glass spool-like lights and hand-made cabinets with integrated drawers for showcasing the newly designed products boxes.

The skin we’re in: Tempio

Never judge a book by its cover, goes the old saying. Truth is, we often do. And when it comes to the specification of a facade, the skin we live (or work in) plays a critical role.

Spanish go-to ceramic-facade experts Tempio have established themselves as an obvious choice for architects looking to specify facades that add real value in terms of both aesthetics and performance. Available in a range of colours, as well as customisable, their ventilated-facade systems provide thermal and acoustic insulation, as well as being durable and sustainably produced.

Seoul’s D-Tower, along with the University of New South Wales and the Abercrombie Business School in Sydney, are just a few prime examples of Tempio in action.
