Getting high

I spent a number of years living in an architecturally listed, modernist block of flats in South London. Built in the mid-1930s, it could have been straight out of Stuttgart's Weissenhofsiedlung, all ribbon fenestration and archly cantilevered balconies. Very un-British!

Two things were a perennial disappointment while resident. The first, the lack of insulation. Single-glazed steel-framed windows and concrete walls with the slimmest of cork linings made for very cold winters. The second was the fact that the roof gardens, possibly the estate's crowning glory, were permanently closed due to structural issues. Enough to make Le Corbusier turn in his grave.

But turn to Asia and you'll see how the roof garden is making a comeback, where, as an additional benefit, vegetation is regularly being deployed for valuable thermal protection.

Stay well.

Urban Bloom, Shanghai, by Aim Architecture

Urban Bloom: an experiment in human interest taking precedent over infrastructural needs. The garden pop-up transformed a car park into an urban oasis, and was constructed entirely from artificial means – a project for a city that emphasises people.
