Naturally cool: why passive shading and ventilation will change the future of facades

The need to minimise energy consumption affects many aspects of architecture, and designs that employ traditional or cutting-edge shading devices and ventilation methods are at the forefront of reducing our reliance on air conditioning. Architonic examines some ecologically innovative projects. (Text by Alyn Griffith)

55 per cent of the facade is solid, with the aluminium lenses surrounding windows with 46 per cent visual light transmission

Windows perform many important roles in a building’s design; allowing light to enter while keeping bad weather out, insulating the interior while allowing views of the surroundings. However, the trend of the past two decades for covering entire buildings in glazing has negative environmental implications that have provoked a reaction from the architectural community. Rather than crystal towers that trap heat and rely on mechanical cooling, architects are designing structures that employ passive methods of shading and ventilation to control a building’s interior environment.

ARCHITECTURE AND THE BUILDING INDUSTRY GET A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE IN MILAN AT MADE EXPO 2015

It’s a highly specialised, vertically-based trade show that understands how critical “innovation, sustainability and beauty” are to the design process. Now being staged every two years, MADE expo (Milan, 18-21 March 2015) is a landmark event that has gone from strength to strength. The 2013 edition of the show achieved over 211,000 visitors (36,000 from outside Italy) – almost 40% of whom were planning professionals.

MADE expo is more specialised than ever, with its four special-interest exhibitions designed to generate untold synergies among the products and services employed by the building industry to stay ahead of an increasingly interconnected and ever-changing market.

MADE Constructions and Materials

The spotlight will be shining on construction systems and technologies, solutions for upgrading and ensuring the safety of existing and new buildings, refurbishments and energy refits, all with the aim of lifting comfort levels and improving the quality of interiors. Exhibitors will include the biggest names in additives, insulating materials, reinforcements, fibres and the best decorative paints to bear the Made in Italy label. The exhibition will focus on seismic and environmental engineering, and explore the most advanced solutions for safeguarding local areas and containing hydrogeological risk. Other topics will include modern construction systems in timber, concrete, bricks and steel.

MADE Building Envelope and Windows

On the strength of the over 31,000 window manufacturers who participated in 2013, the event is now indisputably the only Italian exhibition that represents the entire pipeline, including doors and windows, blinds and awnings, shading systems, protection, building envelope and roofing. One of the event’s unique features is its focus on manufacturing technologies and solutions, with an emphasis on product performance, regardless of whether the choice is wood, aluminium or PVC.

MADE Interiors and Finishings

This exhibition brings together design, technology and research to offer Italian and international designers, contractors and retailers a multitude of top-quality solutions and pioneering products in the area of finishings and interior architecture. Flooring systems, wall coverings, interior doors, handles and accessories, main doors, false ceilings, indoor partitions, wall units, stairs and finishings define the style of a home or public area, enhance comfort and enjoyment levels, and represent the most flexible tools available to architects and interior designers for designing new units and refurbishing and restructuring existing ones.

MADE Software, Technologies and Services

The 2015 exhibition will be bringing some major changes: the spotlight will be on professionals and businesses, and on giving designers, architects and contractors the tools and services they need to put their best foot forward and improve their bottom line. The latest software offerings will include building structural design and calculation, building envelope architectural design, BIM tools, interior design and energy optimisation, and project management and building-site management, as well as 3D printers and plotters. Laser and GPS systems will also be featured at the show.

The ‘Building the Expo’ exhibition

Preparations are forging ahead for this special exhibition showcasing the plans and projects for Expo 2015’s self-built and corporate pavilions. The curator is Professor Luisa Collina, Delegate of the Rector for Expo 2015 and Major Events from the Polytechnic University of Milan. In line with the highly specialised nature of the show, both exhibitions will be centred on the construction features and technologies that have gone into building the various self-built and corporate pavilions at Expo 2015.
