Meeting of the waters

The bathroom – like the kitchen – is one of those literal spaces that wears its programmatic function on its sleeve. Yet, architecturally, it's long transcended its utilitarian purpose, becoming fertile ground – both in contract and residential settings – for rich creative expression and spatial experimentation. 

Yes, retreat seems to be one idea that attends more recently completed bathroom projects (the notion of 'sanctuary' is often deployed here), but the trend in opening up the bathroom to make it continuous with living areas – and not just in hotels – would seem to counter this. Open-plan bathing. I'm up for it if you are...

Gallery House, La Pobla de Cérvoles by Raul Sanchez

The Gallery House – originally an old house located in the small town of La Pobla de Cérvoles, in Lleida, Catalonia – was developed by the owners of the nearby Mas Blanch i Jové winery who renovated it in order to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the winery. Each of its bathrooms is rendered in a different colour, highlighted by the joint between ceramic tiles, the painting of the walls, and the colour of the sinks.
