N°24: GIULIO IACCHETTI
Giulio Iacchetti likes to invent new objects that link to what already exists in people’s minds, yet not losing the element of surprise.

Architonic talked to the Italian designer who shared his opinion on durability and use of materials in the design process.

Giulio Iacchetti: I think that materials need to be verifiable, because we are making projects that should last for several epochs – or at least this should be our target.

The eagerly-anticipated meeting with the renowned British architect, 1999 Pritzker Prize winner, will be held on Tuesday 27 September at 11.00 am

Maintaining its longstanding focus on the world’s great architecture, this year Cersaie has invited award-winning British architect Lord Norman Foster, winner of the 1999 Pritzker Prize, to give the much-anticipated Keynote Lecture. Entitled “10 on 10: Ten Fosters and Ten others”, the lecture will be held in the Palazzo dei Congressi in the Bologna exhibition centre at 11.00 a.m. on Tuesday 27 September and will be introduced by architecture historian Francesco Dal Co. During the lecture, Foster will discuss 10 projects of his own and 10 carried out by other architects who have influenced him during his extraordinary career.

Lord Foster (in 1999 he was honoured with a life peerage as Lord Foster of Thames Bank) was born in Manchester in 1935. He graduated from Manchester University School of Architecture and City Planning in 1961, then gained a Master’s Degree in Architecture from Yale University. After setting up the practice Team 4 in partnership with Richard Rogers, and his later wife Wendy with whom in 1964 he founded the firm Foster Associates in London.  This led to the partnership of Foster + Partners which now has studios in more than 20 countries worldwide.  In 1999 Norman Foster won the Pritzker Architecture Prize and in 2000 the Praemium Imperiale Award for Architecture.

Some of his best-known works include the Willis Faber & Dumas headquarters (Ipswich, UK), the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (Norwich, UK), the Hongkong Bank Headquarters (Hong Kong), Hong Kong International Airport and Stansted Airport (UK), the Bilbao metro system (Spain), the Torre de Collserola (Barcelona, Spain), restoration of the Reichstag building (Berlin, Germany), the Carré d’Art (Nîmes, France), the London City Hall (UK) and the Swiss Re headquarters at 30 St. Mary Axe (London, UK).

His latest works include the Millennium Bridge in London, the Millau Viaduct in France, the Hearst Tower in New York, Beijing International Airport, Masdar City in the UAE and Apple Campus 2 in Cupertino, California.

“I can’t describe my style […] because there isn’t a style, because no two projects are the same,” Foster said during an interview at the Biennale in 2012. “We don’t have a formula, we have a belief in research, we have a belief in human needs. We have a belief that every project is starting from a clean sheet of paper, even though we build up layers of experience. My inspirations? Impossible to name, too many. I’m inspired by the work of any architect who produces good buildings […]. I’m inspired by the work of engineers, I’m inspired by aircraft, I’m inspired by poetry, by paintings… the list of inspirations is endless and changes all the time. I think that architecture is a response to human needs […]. The power of architecture is that everything that we experience is designed […] and affects the quality of our lives because we live in a world which we create.”

Norman Foster recently set up “The Norman Foster Foundation to promote research and help younger generation of architects, designers and urban planners prepare for the future. The Foundation’s first project, a life-size prototype of a brick droneport, was presented at the Architecture Biennale in Venice. The project aims to create a network of droneports by 2030 for the purpose of delivering medicines and essential supplies to remote locations in developing countries.
SOLANO BENÍTEZ AND HIS ARCHITECTURAL VALUES AT CERSAIE 2016

Paraguayan architect and lecturer Solano Benítez, founder of the practice “Gabinete de Arquitectura”, will give a conference discussing his work in the Architecture Gallery on Wednesday 28 September at 5.00 pm.

Gabinete de Arquitectura – where Solano Benítez works together with his partners Gloria Cabral and Solanito Benítez – won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for best participant in the 15th International Exhibition “Reporting From The Front” curated by Alejandro Aravena. Their exhibit, consisting of a large low-tech brick and mortar archway, harnessed simple materials, structural ingenuity and unskilled labour to bring architecture to underserved communities.

Born in Asunción in 1963, Solano Benítez graduated in architecture from the National University of Asunción in 1986 and founded Gabinete de Arquitectura in 1987. He distinguished himself in the field of contemporary architecture from an early age, winning several awards and accolades during his thirty-year career.

In 1999, Solano Benítez received an Outstanding Youth award from the Junior Chamber of Paraguay for contributions to national culture. This award was followed by many others, including in 2008 the BSI Swiss Architectural Award, an international recognition for architects under the age of fifty who have done significant work in the field of contemporary architecture. In 2011, Benítez won an honourable mention from the National Congress of Paraguay for his contribution to the nation. In 2011 he was elected Arquitecto del Bicentenario by the Paraguayan Architects’ Association and in 2012 became an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects.

Benítez’s architectural style reflects his preference for the use of brick as the main construction material in keeping with Paraguay’s building traditions. His close ties with his homeland are also reflected in his consistent use of local labour, which he considers a source of innovation. In particular, he views the lack of specialisation of the local workforce as an opportunity rather than a hurdle.

Along with the Golden Lion in 2016, Gabinete de Arquitectura has won various awards, including in 1999 the Work of the Decade Award for the period 1989-1999 from the Paraguay College of Architects. The same year the practice was a finalist in the Mies van der Rohe award for Latin America and in 1994 represented Paraguay in the Venice Biennale, in the São Paulo biennial and in Lisbon during its stint as the Ibero-American Capital of Culture.

Solano Benítez’s major works include: the Ytú tourist village in Paraguay (finalist in the Mies van der Rohe Award); the Piribebuy Grave (Paraguay) in 2000 and 2001; the Unilever site in Villa Elisa (winning project in the BSI Swiss Architectural Award) between 2000 and 2001; Casa Esmeraldina, in his native city of Asunción in 2002; Casa Fanego, also in Asunción, in 2003 with Sergio Fanego; Casa Abu & Font in Asunción, between 2005 and 2006; Casa Las Anitas in San Pedro, 2007-2008; Edificio Alambra in San Lorenzo, currently under construction.
YOUNG ITALIAN ARCHITECTS DISCUSS THEIR WORK AT CERSAIE

Studio Diverserighe: Simone Gheduzzi, Nicola Rimondi, Gabriele Sorichetti

As part of the eighth edition of Cersaie’s cultural programme “building, dwelling, thinking”, a conference entitled “Forum: Italia.Architetti4.0” will be held at 10.00 am on Thursday 29 September in the Architecture Gallery (Gallery 21/22).

In the company of architecture historian Fulvio Irace and architect and moderator Pierluigi Mutti, a number of  young architects who have recently risen to prominence will discuss their work and the architecture profession, focusing in particular on what it means to work as a young architect in Italy today. This year’s Forum is the natural extension of the one held at Cersaie in 2014 which hosted young Italian architects who had chosen to pursue their careers abroad. As in the previous Forum, some of the invited architects will take part via Skype, while others will be physically present. They include practices that have gained notoriety for recently concluded projects, most notably Diverserighestudio, Labics, Francesco Librizzi and TAMassociati.
Francesco Librizzi

The Bologna-based practice Diverserighestudio was founded in 2003 by architects Nicola Raimondi, Simone Gheduzzi and Gabriele Sorichetti. Their multidisciplinary research strives to give form to the relationship between different areas of knowledge and to create an ongoing dialogue between architectural theory and practice. They view architectural composition as a dynamic relationship between function and aesthetics.

Labics is a Rome-based architecture practice working in the field of architectural and urban design. Founded in 2002 by Maria Claudia Clemente and Francesco Isidori, Labics carries out projects on many different scales, from small-scale interior design to large urban masterplans. The name of the practice refers to the concept of a laboratory, a test bench for cutting-edge ideas. Theoretical research and practical applications are a key part of its work.

Francesco Librizzi, a native of Palermo, founded his Milanese practice in 2005. Today he is recognised as one of the most innovative of the new generation of Italian interior designers. He has won awards and recognitions such as the Prix Émile Hermès (2008) and the Compasso d’Oro Honourable Mention (2014). His work has been exhibited at the Louvre in Paris, the Triennale in Milan and the Venice Biennale and has been published in numerous international architecture and lifestyle magazines such as Domus, Abitare, Lotus, Wallpaper and Dezeen.

Studio TAMassociati is a practice operating in the fields of sustainable architecture,  urban planning, landscape design, participatory processes, graphic design and social communication. The practice was formed in 1996 and is made up of a team of Italian architects based in Venice. They are renowned worldwide for their sanitation projects carried out in Africa. They have won numerous awards and pursue a philosophy of “caring” as a response to unlimited growth and exploitation with the clear aim of carrying through projects that are respectful of human beings and the environment.
