CUT THE WAFFLE

It’s got a bit of a reputation, Biennale Interieur. With its deft interweaving of the confidently commercial with the unapologetically curatorial, the fair, it’s fair to say, is a bit of a Gesamtkunstwerk – the staging of the exhibition, its mise-en-scène, together with its strict selection criteria and exquisite graphic language.

It’s an exacting enterprise. And its visitors to the Belgian town of Kortrijk have high expectations, too. Particularly of the event’s forthcoming 25th Silver Edition, which runs from 14 to 23 October.

What we do know already is that young Swiss designer Dimitri Bähler has been recognised as the ‘Winner of the Grand Prize’ of this year’s Interieur Awards. Read our interview with him below, the latest installment in our ongoing Architonic Material Tendencies series.

Be inspired!

N°25: DIMITRI BÄHLER

Good things come to those who wait. This certainly applies to the process behind Dimitri Bähler's ‘Volumes, Patterns, Textures and Colors’ – a collection of minimalistic bowls, vases and holders, which has just earned the Swiss designer the Grand Prize Interieur Awards 2016.

Architonic caught up with Bähler to discuss the genesis of the project and why ceramic as a material is so interesting to him.

Dimitri Bähler: Ceramic needs a lot of attention, like cooking. You cannot just leave it and store it for a while. Ceramic is a bit like plastic. It is more about the process and the experimental side that I like when working with the material.

PEDRALI AT THE BIENNALE INTERIEUR

At Kortrijk the Italian manufacturer will focus on new collections and new models that enlarge the existing range. Smart and versatile products, which can be customised thanks to the use of different materials such as wood, metal, plastics and upholsteries in combination.

An example is the Babila armchair designed by Odo Fioravanti, which recalls the distinctive features and design of the collection, taking inspiration from the classic and timeless objects. The functionality of the polypropylene shell or the absolute comfort of the upholstered version can be combined with legs in ash wood, steel tube or steel rod sled frame.

‘Silver Lining - INTERIORS’
From October 14th to 23rd, the 25th edition of the Biennale Interieur will take place in Kortrijk, Belgium. The curatorial team – Brussels-based architectural practice OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen who work in close partnership with visual artist Richard Venlet and graphic designer Joris Kritis – have chosen ‘Silver Lining – INTERIORS’ as the theme of this Biennale. Silver will be everywhere in this edition, a festive reference to the 25th anniversary. With the subtitle ‘INTERIORS’, we want to emphasise a return to the roots of the Biennale. While the design object itself took centre stage in its own right in the 1990s, the focus now shifts back to complete interiors. This is where it began for Interieur in 1968.

‘House for a day bed’ INTERIOR by Johnston Marklee and Jonathan Olivares
You will be able to literally dive into different rooms and atmospheres by international guests, who were invited by the curatorial team. Discover INTERIORS by Swiss curator Moritz Küng, Swiss-French architect Philippe Rahm, the architectural firm Johnston Marklee and designer Jonathan Olivares – both based in Los Angeles. Expect further installations by American designer Jonathan Muecke and a collaboration between Swiss architects and designers Trix & Robert Haussmann and the Swiss curators STUDIOLO – Fredi Fischli & Niels Olsen. Finally, The Solo House project by OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen will also be the subject of one of the INTERIORS. Solo Houses are a series of architectural holiday homes at a large estate in Spain. Designer duo Muller Van Severen, visual artist Richard Venlet and artist Pieter Vermeersch will also contribute.

UNIQUE EXHIBITION DESIGN
Text: Biennale Interieur
As always, exhibition design also gets some well-deserved attention. Biennale Interieur aims to show inspiring, original booth designs that go beyond a catalogue image. We selected our international participants with this aim in mind, and continually work with them to create an exceptional ‘total’ environment.

In addition, Interieur proactively approached a selection of designers and architects and challenged them to create unique and inspiring installations in collaboration with a brand. Michael Young – guest of honour during the 2002 Biennale – will, for example, test the boundaries of gravity with natural stone specialist Van Den Weghe. The latter will bring along designs by Muller Van Severen, Glenn
Sestig and others. Studio Dessuant Bone, a young French-British duo, joins forces with Allaert Aluminium. Using the OTIIMA system, they will develop a series of interactive sculptures and installations.

Kvadrat team up with renowned Shanghai-based design duo Neri & Hu, who work with them on presenting their iconic fabrics. Luce di Carrara brings wonderful Italian marble in the form of work by Lorenzo Damiani, a designer known to surprise. Nedda El-Asmar,
Belgian Designer of the Year 2007, will make an inspirational Magnitude® installation with LS Bedding, surprising visitors with two contrasting set-ups where fairy tales come true and princesses feel at home. Michael Verheyden makes his mark on the Hullebusch installation. LoT architecture, based in New York and Greece, will create an eye-catching stand for sister companies ArgentAlu and Renson.

Everything for the contemporary interior

Apart from a selection of smart furniture and lighting, Biennale Interieur also offers innovative, surprising and sophisticated finishes and materials. No lack of interior design specialists either, who add a bespoke touch with their made-to-measure design solutions.

INTERIEUR AWARDS 2016
Text: Biennale Interieur
The Interieur Awards have been a part of Biennale Interieur since 1970. This competition for new Objects and Spaces is an important stepping-stone for designers.
3.1 Spaces Category: discover at the 5 winning bars with unique food concepts

Biennale Interieur chooses strong content to surprise its visitors – and the Interieur Awards play an important role in achieving this aim. In 2012, the Biennale introduced the Spaces category, a competition for unique bar and restaurant design with a clear connection between the design and the food concept. 80 high-quality entries from 20 countries were submitted and five winning concepts for a bar/restaurant will be constructed at INTERIEUR 2016.
Three of five winning Interieur Awards bars: Le Banquet Gaulois with a fingerfood banquet in Hall 3, We are family with pitch black dishes in hall 6 and Terra in hall 2, where mushrooms will be growing right in front of you
3.2 Objects Category: winners united in Click! exhibition

The Biennale Interieur received 157 entries from 29 countries for the Objects Category of the Interieur Awards. In addition to a large number of entries from European countries, designers from the US, Japan and South Korea were also well represented. Designers from all corners of the globe such as Mauritius, New Zealand and Syria also competed for places. Grand Prize winner Dimitri Bähler from Switzerland receives €2,500 for his ceramics project called ‘Volumes, Patterns, Textures and Colors’. All the winning objects will be united in an exhibition at INTERIEUR 2016 called ‘Click’. ‘Click’ introduces a new way to experience products between the physical object and its digital image; placed against an infinity wall each object is framed within the exhibition space. The scenography’s architecture allows an object to be captured perfectly on its own, or zooming out one can view the entire collection of winners. Visitors are invited to capture each object and share online to archive both the exhibition and the objects themselves, generating a digital memory of the Interieur Awards 2016.

THE FLOOR IS YOURS: YOUNG TALENT AND NEWS LABELS
Text: Biennale Interieur
With the platform The Floor is Yours, Biennale Interieur and its curators decided to devote more than 2,000 square metres at the heart of Kortrijk Xpo to new talent and designer-driven labels. This is the Biennale’s way of responding to the major changes that have been taking place in the design industry and economy during the last decade. In many cases, objects are directly produced and sold by the producers and designers. Interieur continues to strengthen its role as a catalyst and platform for new developments. It’s a simple, flexible and accessible idea: designers and labels can pick a shape – a square, triangle or parallelogram – and decide on a size from 1 to 99m2 for a unique freestanding installation.

The Floor is Yours partcipants Custhom (UK), Studio Solo & GENERIEK Architects (BE) and 8 Berlin-based designers united by IDZ (DE)
One of the highlights of The Floor is Yours is The Wall, Nieuwe German Gestaltung #004, an exhibition curated by Max Borka. The Berlin- and Brussels-based Belgian design critic, curator and director of STATE OF DESIGN, BERLIN will unite innovative and experimental work by more than 50 German-born and German-based designers, design studios and creatives.

TEXTURE SITE: BEATING HEART OF INTERIEUR IN THE CITY
Text: Biennale Interieur
For its city programme, Biennale Interieur has elected the Texture site at the North Bridge: a renovated neighbourhood in Kortrijk that has all the assets to offer both international and local visitors an inspiring and surprising journey.

The site around the North Bridge comprises firstly the Texture Museum building itself; this stunning architectural renovation in 2014 by Brussels-based noAarchitecten is a landmark alongside the river Lys and will be the main hub of the city programme. The neighbouring industrial warehouse ‘Vlaskaai’ will be a second spot at the Texture site, which will focus on
research and experimentation.
New hub of the city programme of INTERIEUR 2016
With ‘textile’ being the key topic for the 25th edition, nobody was better placed than world renowned trend forecaster Li Edelkoort to curate WILD THINGS, the main exhibition of the Biennale Interieur city programme. WILD THINGS is an exhibition curated by Lidewij Edelkoort (NL) and Philip Fimmano (AU), which will take place in the Treasury Room of the Texture Museum. This contemporary design selection will investigate how objects of the future seek to incorporate an energy or life force, defining a new era of design with soul.
