Woven in Morocco during the mid-20th century, this extraordinary vintage rug showcases an inventive composition with multiple large-scale columns that incorporate grand lozenge-shaped compartments formed by checkered outlines. These angular stacked lozenges abruptly transform into a series of zigzagging diamonds that cascade across the field. Secondary small-scale motifs with extended limbs that are sheltered by checkered chevrons line the upper reaches of the field adding a level of complexity to the abstract composition. The deep earthy brown motifs are strongly offset by the sumptuous overlapping layers of ribbed pile. This chic and richly textural background perfectly complements the abstract patterns featured in the foreground.
