The freedom of design: Sarah Maier tells us about her work for KALDEWEI

The path of flow: For water it just comes naturally, for bathroom design however, it has, up to now, been one of the more difficult challenges. The concept of the floor-level shower surface, which KALDEWEI has cultivated in a wide variety of shapes and products, has removed some of the physical and creative obstacles, as well as a few of the other practical stumbling blocks – issues related to hygiene for example, like the joints between tiles. And it’s also a plus for architects when some other issues related to a project’s implementation have already been ironed out in advance – with intelligent products.

'At the end of the day, good bathroom design must function mercilessly well,' says interior designer Sarah Maier from Stuttgart. In her work, KALDEWEI products blend into bathroom scenarios. And they combine all the more smoothly when aesthetic and functional requirements have already merged – in this case, in the development of floor-level building blocks for bathroom architecture. What Maier particularly appreciates is that she can draw on a broad vocabulary of clear forms at KALDEWEI, and also articulate her own creative approach individually, in the 'supreme discipline of architecture', as Maier calls bathroom design.

To do this, she arranges various elements, aesthetically balances surfaces and lines, and intelligently finds the place where the desired and the necessary meet. The only thing allowed to tilt minutely off the horizontal is the slight slope of the shower surface, but this is just to point water in the right direction, as it flows effortlessly and elegantly away. In the drain, the water again disappears from sight and perception, but not before it has cleaned, and offered you a feeling of well-being and relaxation: Where else, but the shower.
