Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten is well known for its close ties to the arts world. The company has a long-established practice of entering into partnerships and collaborative projects with various top cultural institutions, including Vienna’s Burgtheater. When the Burgtheater issued an invitation to submit designs for a new chair it seemed inevitable that Wittmann would respond to its call, eventually going on to win the bid. The brief stipulated an exclusive, timeless chair design for use in various conference settings at the theatre. The winning entry would be both stackable and joinable. Soda Designers’ submission won the jury over. Wittmann then went on to develop a variant of the design for use in a residential setting. Elegant and graceful, the Burg chair adapts well to a range of different applications throughout the home. The option of a contrasting piping and the availability of various wood stains and lacquer finishes for the legs open up considerable scope for customisation within this furniture programme. A high quality interior sprung seat and flexible backrest provide the exception seating comfort associated with Wittmann furniture. The model with armrests cuts a light and transparent figure. A particularly fine example of the designers’ mastery of elegant detail, this design feature also reflects the quality of craftsmanship that goes into a genuine Wittmann.
