“NewspaperWood is a new material based on a concept by Mieke Meijer, developed together with and licensed to the Dutch designlabel Vij5. NewspaperWood returns newspapers, which are made of wood, into wood again. When a NewspaperWood log is cut, the layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree and therefore resembles the aesthetic of real wood.”
The newspaper: a report of facts and events, which can be decomposed into images and characters. For NewspaperWood, Greetje has zoomed in on these characters. She analysed the alphabet and simplified it into abstracted forms.
Fragmented, they now form drawer handles in a desk that facilitates working on an own history.
The fronts of the desk are from NewspaperWood and treated with wax. The abstracted letters are lasercut and function as the grips on the differ- ent drawers in the desk.
