Clear, modern, elegant: glass surfaces for classic side tables
The new glass versions of the tubular steel side furniture programs B 9 and B 97 – just like the new “Classics in Colour” line – represent the trend of change and further development of selected Thonet classics. The glass surface enhances the clear, lightweight design of the tubular steel frames on which the top just seems to sit. The simple and functional program B 9, consisting of side tables and stools of various heights, is a design by Bauhaus instructor Marcel Breuer. The table set B 97 without back legs is an in-house design.
Tubular steel and glass – the perfect combination
Glass is an “old” material with a long and multifaceted history in design. Now, Thonet combines the simple elegance and transparency of the fascinating material with the clear lines and reserved design of the bent tubular steel side furniture – a timeless combination. The design of the tubular steel side tables and stools was created in the context of the development of tubular steel furniture in the 1920s and 1930s. They consist simply of a bent chrome-plated tubular steel frame on which the glass top looks weightless and airy. The furniture symbolizes the unity of design and technology and is highly functional: the open design of the side tables allows them to be nested one under the other to save space. They are a flexible solution for the residential and contract sector.
Signs of their times and very modern: the side table series B 9 and B 97
Marcel Breuer’s series B 9, first presented in the 1925/26 Thonet catalog, consists of four versions: the side tables B 9 a-d are available in various sizes and can be purchased individually or as a set. Due to their matching sizes, the individual pieces of furniture can be nested one under the other or arranged in a cascade. The table set B 97 went into production at Thonet in 1933. Today, it consists of a large and small side table, with the latter fitting nesting under the larger table. Due to the curved shape of the chrome-plated tubular steel, which serves as a frame for the tabletops, it seems as though the table stands on two legs. The construction without back legs allows users to pull them over the edge of a sofa or bed – a very practical detail. In addition to the new versions with glass tops the two table series B 9 and B 97 are also presented with lacquered steel frames at imm cologne. Thonet’s new “Classics in Colour” series comprises seven trendy colors.
