Seemingly simple yet marvelously complex, this exceptional vintage Swedish Kilim features rows upon rows of contrasting tile motifs. These cleverly composed tiles incorporate contrasting combinations of beige and robust brown with warm red undertones, which are placed in a strategic repeating pattern. Each cell features a coffered block that is set on point within a larger tile. Divided quadrilaterals and hash-mark grids are placed in light and dark compartments respectively. The contrasting quarter-square figures that appear behind the coffered centerpiece form an extraordinary counter change pattern. Each of these triangular motifs is juxtaposed against contrasting figures that produce a secondary pattern of quarter-square triangles that fill the area between the coffered squares. Using an extremely limited palette of two colors, this ingenious Swedish flat-weave vintage rug makes a bold visual statement.
