Here is a unique and intriguing vintage carpet – a Scandinavian Swedish rya rug. This beautiful and artistic Swedish Rya rug was woven in Scandinavia during the middle years of the twentieth century. Characterized by a highly abstract composition as well as a monochromatic color pallet, this compelling carpet is an excellent example of the sort of modern art that found its way onto the finest Swedish carpets of the period. The piece begins with a splash of dark brown that runs around most of the perimeter of the carpet. This gives way to a lighter shade of brown, and then again to an even lighter shade. It is in this lightest portion, which is a sort of tan-ivory tone, that the action of the carpet unfolds: here, a highly abstract composition of lines and circles boldly asserts itself, its many limbs stretching out into the darker brown patches that surround the carpet. Steadfastly abstract, this geometric jumbling of lines and shapes is powerful and provocative; the lack of any sort of concrete framing makes this work a genuine example of the abstract.
