Super and Max are products of an extensive R&D programme. As part of this process, Kvadrat commissioned Swerea IVF, a Swedish institute, to test the textiles for contact pressure, comfort, breathability and resilience. These high-tech textiles are made on a warp-knitting machine by connecting a top and bottom layer of fabric with a monofilament thread system. This innovative construction method creates an air-filled cavity between the layers. As a result, Super and Max are extremely comfortable and are suitable for a wide range of environments, including offices, commercial spaces and private homes. Though they complement each other well, there are key differences between the fabrics. Super, designed to be versatile, is made exclusively from polyester and has a slightly more pronounced structure. It features a larger air-filled cavity, which means it offers better breathability and comfort. In addition, it delivers slightly stronger recovery performance than Max, before and after usage. Max, on the other hand, has been developed to meet the need for an extremely flexible and easy-to-work with fabric that is ideal for upholstering organic shapes and complicated forms. For this reason, Max is constructed from polyester and elastane, which makes it extremely stretchable.
Åsa Pärson, the acclaimed Swedish textile designer, has crafted a palette to complement the technical nature of Super and Max, which combines playful colours. The knitted, shiny surfaces of the fabrics create shadows, adding depth to the warm tones of orange, aubergine, yellow and sand, as well as the cooler shades of dark blue, green and black. In her work, Åsa Pärson prefers fixed structures; a key idea that underpins much of her work is the notion of letting only the essentials remain. Åsa Pärson has exhibited in Japan, France, England and Sweden and has received several grants, including one from the Swedish Government Art Grants Committé. Recently, she has been awarded a further grant to research specific weaving methods in Japan and Sweden. The Swedish designer has also won several awards including the 2006 Excellence In Textiles, Selvedge Magazine Award at ORIGIN, London.
