These are the undisputed trademarks of the city of Venice. They are oaken stakes planted in the seabed and used to reveal the waterways and tides to incoming vessels. On average the stakes in the lagoon last for 10 to 20 years, then corroded by the tides, they have to be replaced periodically. A main feature of the stakes, which also serve as a natural habitat for the sea's fauna and flora, consists in the traces left by shipworms. These are long shellfish which burrow through the wood, leaving perfectly round holes and go on to create designs and silhouettes which are very suggestive.
Submerged in water and tempered by salt, exposed to the weather and sculpted by shellfish, this high quality oak becomes in the course of time a wood absolutely unique, precious, romantic and noble, owing to its historical value and intrinsic characteristics. Riva 1920 has resolved to grant this wood a third life by launching a collection of furniture made of briccole without impacting the environment, for it should not be forgotten that wood is a precious but not infinite resource. Once more nature is the absolute protagonist, arousing fascinating and unique emotions.
This major project has important and fundamental contributions from 33 designers (Terry Dwan, Paola Navone, Angela Missoni, Luisa Castiglioni, Antonio Citterio, Matteo Thun, Michele De Lucchi, Mario Botta, Riccardo Arbizzoni, Elio Fiorucci, Paolo Pininfarina, Franco e Matteo Origoni, Pierluigi Cerri, Erasmo Figini, Enzo Mari, Marc Sadler, Luca Scacchetti, Aldo Cibic, Helidon Xhixha, Karim Rashid, David Chipperfield, Aldo Spinelli, Carlo Colombo, Paolo Piva, Claudio Bellini, Thomas Herzog, Philippe Starck, Pinuccio Sciola, Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi, Giuliano Cappelletti, Piero Lissoni, Gualtiero Marchesi), stylists and contemporary sculptors called on to interpret this fantastic wood in terms of a collection of furniture meant to be on the one hand a celebration of this recycled material and on the other a tribute to the city of Venice.
