From 17 to 19 November 2015, DESIGN POST will be exclusively focusing on the topic of light. With three days featuring talks, special exhibitions and product presentations at Cologne's 'home of design', architects, planners and designers are invited to an exciting round-up on the latest trends in lighting and light design. A special focus will be on the development of LED technology. Star guest of the kick-off event on 17 November will be Nobel laureate and physicist Prof. Dr. Shuji Nakamura.

DESIGN POST, the showroom for design aficionados located in the Cologne district of Deutz, has put together a special event on the theme of lighting, which not only includes DESIGN POST's permanent lighting exhibitors: Light Week Köln will feature informative expert talks, panel discussions and special product presentations. The event will focus on topics such as the development of LED technology and its effect on our environment or the possibilities of using light in architecture. There will also be opportunities to meet exhibitors for discussion and for exchanging ideas and experience.

Technologies that change our (design) world

In DESIGN POST’s special interior and ambience, experts will discuss and showcase the topic of LED technology from different perspectives: from the perspective of engineers, artists and designers, as well as from the perspective of planners and architects. As a special highlight, Nobel laureate Prof. Dr. Shuji Nakamura will speak about major developments in LED technology during a panel discussion on the first day (17 November). Last year, together with two other scientists, Prof. Dr. Shuji Nakamura received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of efficient blue laser LEDs that enable bright white light sources.

With this invention, the scientists have created a technology that has significantly shaped design and will also have a major influence on the future of lighting design. Prof. Dr. Shuji Nakamura will discuss with Walter Bamberger (among other things, responsible for the lighting at the Cologne cathedral, with Prof. Andreas Schulz from the Licht Kunst Licht planning office (Bonn and Berlin) and with artist and designer Moritz Waldemeyer (London).

Until the mid-1990s, the listed building belonged to Deutsche Post. In 2005, in strict compliance with statutory requirements, the building was refurbished and modernised, resulting in a light-flooded exhibition space that is today known as a source of information and inspiration, a meeting point and a place for industry exhibitions. From distribution to communication: the structure that used to be a distribution centre for parcels is now a communication platform and networking space for the design industry, for planners and consumers.
