Concept

“I have always desired to do the opposite. Not because I have an anarchic behaviour.
But because I think the fundamental basis of design consists in thinking the opposite”.
Italian designer Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002) had a passion for re-designing, re-inventing and re-conceptualizing. Traditional interior design objects would pass through his Milan based studio and end up perfected. He always aimed at enhancing and glorifying the value of the design.
Throughout his career he worked to raise design to an ever-higher level of synthesis – stripping design down to the very core and eliminating everything superfluous. One of the many beautiful proofs of this approach is his Hanging bookcase. Originally designed in 1957, perfected over the years, and produced by Bernini in 1966. Seeking to pare down the structure of a bookcase to the absolute minimum, Castiglioni decided to hang the shelves on knots in two cords fixed to a single point on the wall. The 1966 version consisted of four birch boards, faced with natural phenolic laminate, supported by two slender cables joined at the point of attachment – a satin-finish brass plate anchored to the wall.

Today Castiglioni’s children hold all the rights to his work and the foundation, La Fondazione Achille Castiglioni, is managed from the very same studio where Castaglioni worked for more than 30 years. Karakter Copenhagen has acquired the rights to produce several Castaglioni designs and will be launching more of his magnificent work over the coming years.
