Agenda February – March 2014

An Open and Shut Case: architecturally creative windows and doors

Beyond their utilitarian function, windows and doors set up an emotional expectation on the part of visitors as to what they'll encounter within a building, while, at the same time, negotiating the relation that users inside have with the exterior world. Little wonder that so many architects are engaged in a perennial experimentation with these fundamental structural elements.

In their most mundane form, windows provide buildings with light, ventilation and afford views of the outside world. Ideally, like a carefully composed landscape painting, they frame views creatively rather than arbitrarily by looking out, say, on to a particularly picturesque spot. Doors to the outside world provide buildings with exits and entrances, protect them from intruders or welcome visitors. In its multitude of forms, ranging from the bombastic to the discreet and even clandestine, the main entrance to a building gives those who enter it one of their first impressions of what to expect beyond it in terms of its function, architectural style and atmosphere. Internal doors help determine an interior’s layout by dividing a space into rooms, when closed, while sliding doors promote the idea of fluidity and flexibility.

Sliding doors and a retractable roof in three cabins near a holiday house in Norway create a multifunctional space used as a tool shed, summer house or camping area

Architonic Photo Tour imm cologne 2014

After last year’s bad weather during imm cologne, the Kölnmesse was delighted to receive what looks like a record number of visitors this time round. The efforts on the part of organisers to attract more North American visitors seem to have borne fruit. With European design having been considered by many Stateside in the last few years as desirable but unaffordable, the US is once again building and buying on a grand scale.

The first two evenings during imm cologne saw the international design scene descend for the fourth year running on the Architonic Disco at the King Georg club-bar, which has slowly but surely become an unmissable night-time highlight of the Cologne fair.

We’ve put together a comprehensive photo tour of imm cologne and Design Post for you on Facebook. Enjoy!

Architonic Disco and Form PechaKucha Night Stockholm

Architonic and Form Magazine join forces to present a night of two halves at the end of the first day of Stockholm Furniture Fair. We cordially invite you to celebrate with us on 4 February 2014.

Form Magazine welcomes you to PechaKucha Night at Berns Salonger, next to Berzelii Park. The bar opens at 7.30 pm, and at 8.20 pm PechaKucha Night itself starts.

The Architonic Disco then kicks off at 9.00 pm - for the first time ever in Stockholm – in the unique nightclub Berns Gallery 2.35:1. Stockholm-based DJ Staffan Lindberg will be playing his finest tracks.

It's the perfect opportunity at the end of a hard day at the fair to meet friends, discuss your initial impressions in a relaxed atmosphere, and to develop your visions for 2014.
