Sleeping Around: contemporary hotel design checks in

With an increase in international travel predicted for 2013, on the heels of a rebound for hoteliers last year, the hotel industry is looking more than ever for ways to make the visitor experience a memorable and profitable one. Enter striking architecture and design.

Both cultural reference and cultural institution: Neri & Hu’s Xi’an Western Museum Hotel riffs on the vernacular architectural idioms of the ancient Chinese city, in addition, as its name suggests, to housing a museum itself; photos Pegenaute

When times are tough, one’s instinct is often to hunker down.

The old motto that there’s nothing like one’s own bed would seem to ring more true when the world outside is volatile. Home. Familiarity. Safety.

Yet the business of resting one’s head away from home is anything but flat. Economic and political uncertainty in many parts of the world, as well as a slow-down in growth in Asia’s leading economies, has certainly proved challenging for the hospitality industry globally. However, 2012 saw signs of a rebound for hoteliers, with an increase in tourism anticipated in 2013 internationally, the result, according to Ernst & Young, of ‘renewed efforts of destination marketing organisations, the increased use of technology and a growing interest in travel among the middle class of various emerging economies.’

According to the global assurance and tax firm, revenue in the US hospitality has returned to pre-crisis, 2007 levels, while an impressive 100 million Chinese leisure tourists are projected to travel abroad in 2013. And they have to stay somewhere.

architektur 0.13: Wanted – creative ideas versus boring architecture!

architektur 0.13 is the largest and most important curated exposition of architecture in Switzerland. Created as an inspiring pocket size EXPO, architektur 0.13 shows visions and ideas of 100 architects and companies, established as well as promising young blood. Now, the inscription has started. We are looking for futurists who set their visions against boring architecture from October 25 to 27, 2013 at Maag Hall in Zurich. The early bird catches the worm: application deadline is September 16, 2013.

Innovation Station: Belgrade Design Week 2013

Plugging in to Belgrade Design Week means a number of things. A high-calibre line-up of international speakers. Inspiring conversations and encounters. And a lot of parties. The Serbian capital shows how it’s done.

It may have something to do with Serbia’s recent past and the realisation that you only live once – carpe diem, and all that – or it could just be the native love of making new friends and (as anyone who has been to Belgrade will testify to) having a good time, but at the region’s leading design event, Belgrade Design Week, it’s ultimately about people, rather than things. Living, breathing, creative, inspiring (and often partying) people.

At BDW 2013 the Greek Beetroot Design Group presented their exhibition "The Greek Monsters", which deals with missunderstood monsters from the Greek mythology and a the same time is a humorous response to Greece's current international image

For all its surrounding events – of which there are many, such as BDW DesignPark, a carefully curated exhibition presenting the work of designers from Serbia, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark and the USA – Belgrade Design Week’s main attraction remains its big-top, three-day conference, which year-on-year manages to draw some of the highest-profile names from the global creative arena to the Danube city.
