Ospedale Giovanni XXIII:
Inspired by the Garden of Eden

Construction of an exceptionally beautiful new church featuring graphic concrete elements was completed this June in Bergamo, Italy. The church forms part of a hospital dedicated to Pope Saint John XXIII. Designed by French architect Aymeric Zublena and Italian architects Pippo and Ferdinando Traversi, the contemporary church makes a strong architectural statement while creating a peaceful space for prayer and contemplation. The minimalist interior features light wood and warm white precast concrete walls with the GCArt&DesignTM pattern. Natural light enters the chapel through round openings in the wall and in the ceiling.
The church will be consecrated on the feast day of Saint John XXIII day, 11 October, which is also the anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. The white interior walls are covered by flowers, plants and shrubs that were inspired by the Garden of Eden. Designed by Stefano Arienti, the floral imagery was realised using delicate rasterised images and a dedicated concrete mix-design, making the overall impression light, airy and calm.
“Graphic concrete was the perfect choice in terms of both the theme and look of the building, as well as for artistic and economic considerations. The creation of this unique building was made possible by precise image processing, rasterising, manufacturing and installation of big panels and thin claddings. This amazing church is a true piece of architectural art where everyone can experience enlightenment,” comments Ivo Allas, Design Director of the Styl-Comp Group.
