Living for a While

Conversion and restoration of Bachem castle, a listed monument in Frechen/Germany
Dating back to the 13th century, the castle has been rebuilt and extended many times during its eventful history. After suffering lasting damage from the nearby coal mining industry and unprofessional modifications to its structure, the monument was finally restored at the end of the last century, saving it from complete dereliction.
A good forty years later, the main building of this listed castle has been modified and renovated again to ensure that it is in a more economically viable state for future use.
The existing building has been converted into seven residential apartments, six of which will be rented out in a furnished state, while the seventh is reserved for the owner.
The respectful handling of existing, often elaborately decorated walls, ceilings and floors; dovetailing of old and new structures and furniture; sensitive use of materials and their surfaces and the sophisticated orchestrating of artificial and natural light has all contributed to the unique character of this castle after the extensive remodeling project.
