Designing for Belonging
In Copenhagen’s Nordhavn district, a new headquarters for AP Pension rises as more than just a workplace—it’s a civic space shaped by community values and forward-thinking design. Conceived by PLH Arkitekter, the building is rooted in a vision of shared purpose and inclusivity.
“We wanted to create a headquarters that radiates belonging—a place where differences are seen as strengths,” explains the team behind the design. That sense of openness extends beyond AP Pension’s employees: the space invites the local community in, with a communal kitchen, a publicly accessible rooftop terrace, and meeting rooms available for associations, clients and private use.
The interior design reflects a deep reading of AP Pension’s DNA as a customer-owned company with a century-long legacy and a clear outlook on the future. In areas where art is integrated into the architecture, furnishings are selected to harmonise with each artist’s palette—ensuring aesthetic unity and a shared narrative of identity.
Fritz Hansen furniture features prominently throughout the building’s central zones. The board lounge and auditorium are appointed with full-upholstered Series 7™ chairs in walnut leather—classic silhouettes chosen for their honest materials, enduring comfort and quiet sophistication. In the atrium, the soft curves and warm tones of the Swan™ chairs and Egg™ chairs in chestnut leather invite calm and conversation under the light-filled roof.
“Fritz Hansen furniture supports our story of responsibility and community,” says the team behind the interior. “It’s about creating a future-facing environment with a respect for quality that lasts.”
Perhaps most striking is the atrium itself—a serene core in the heart of a vibrant building. Here, light, sound and art interact effortlessly with the design, creating a space that feels at once grounding and generous. It’s a compelling reflection of what modern workplaces can be: places not only of productivity, but of presence, participation and care.
