We want to use light to create experiences, make work easier and improve communications and safety while remaining fully aware of our responsibility to the environment.

Zumtobel has been developing the highest quality of lighting solutions tailored to the individual’s needs for more than 50 years. With a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality luminaires, the Austrian lighting specialist provides the right light for every application at any time of day or night. As a leader in innovation, Zumtobel follows an outstanding design approach to continuously push the boundaries in search for perfection through unique and timeless design. As the international supplier of integral lighting solutions develops the next generation of lighting, it builds on its family heritage to refine the aesthetics of light and improve the quality of life through light. Zumtobel is a brand of the Zumtobel Group AG with its headquarters in Dornbirn, Vorarlberg (Austria).

The emotional effects of light

With integral lighting solutions, Zumtobel creates lighting scenes which enable people to experience the interplay of light and architecture in all its diversity. Light unfolds its special creative power in an interplay with space and architecture. The combined use of luminaires, lighting management and emergency lighting systems corresponds to the architecture of a building and is matched to the application.

Use of new technologies

Providing people with optimum lighting quality, whatever they do- Zumtobel is striving to achieve this goal, utilising all technical options available. Zumtobel is able to quickly turn new technologies such as waveguide, micropyramidal structure and LED into high-quality products, systems and sophisticated lighting concepts. In applied research, particular emphasis is placed on energy efficiency. At identical conditions in terms of light sources, daylight-based lighting control and luminaires with increased light output ratio, such as the PANOS PSP+® downlights with silver-coated reflectors, provide more light and increased brightness than standard solutions.

Active Light- Connecting with Nature

Always reliable and yet simultaneously surprising, natural light has guided and accompanied us since the dawn of time. It intuitively supports our natural rhythm and has a dynamic influence on our ability to see, providing us with new images that stimulate our emotions on a daily basis. It controls human processes and even influences our internal clock. Connecting with nature- Active Light supports human nature by drawing inspiration from the character and dynamics of natural light. It takes the three levels of light into account (visual, emotional and biological) and adapts four specific light dimensions to suit constantly changing human needs by modifying intensity, direction, colour and time. This essential relationship between humans and light supports people naturally in every aspect of their personal and professional lives.

Active Light delivers sustainable added value in every application by putting the focus firmly on specific requirements. Shaped by the individual needs, tasks and preferences, Active Light is defined by a dynamic that helps stabilise the natural biorhythm of the human being, enabling maximum visual comfort and stimulating positive emotions.

Design-oriented approach- a piece of corporate culture

It is the perfect combination of optimum lighting quality, technological innovation and design which makes the difference in creative power and added value of light. This applies in particular to the following products:

the TECTON continuous-row lighting system designed by Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners

the LIGHT FIELDS office lighting system designed by Ettore Sottsass & Chris Federn

the HELIODISC task area luminaire designed by Hadi Teherani

the VIVO spotlight system designed by EOOS

the SOLAR II spotlight system designed by Massimo Iosa Ghini

the 2LIGHT recessed luminaire designed by Hartmut S. Engel

the LUXMATE EMOTION lighting management system designed by Matteo Thun

the ONLITE escape sign luminaire designed by EOOS

Light creates a sense of well-being

To provide people with optimum lighting quality, Zumtobel explores the beneficial effects of light on health, continuously improving its utilisability. In this respect, the consumption of energy required for lighting has to be considered, too. The concept of balance between light for enhanced well-being and optimum energy efficiency adjusts the equilibrium between the two aspects within a lighting system: human light + energy efficiency = ""Humanergy Balance"".

Cooperation with project partners to improve opportunities and potentials

Zumtobel is positioned as a global partner in international project management with investors and building developers, architects, lighting designers, electrical consultants, electricians, wholesalers and international distribution partners. High-quality lighting solution concepts, innovative technologies in terms of function and design as well as a wide range of individual services form the basis of integral project solutions.

Advantage through knowledge

Zumtobel has established Light Forums and Light/Consulting Centers at 15 locations to create and maintain sustainable customer loyalty through intense dialogue. The most recent, state-of-the-art Light Forum was opened in November 2005 in Dornbirn. More than 30,000 customers all over the world have so far made use of this unique platform to obtain important practical knowledge relating to basic principles, products and applications in workshops and seminars.

Eco+ – the product label based on energy consumption – Highly ambitious evaluation procedure rewards maximum economic efficiency

With immediate effect, Zumtobel sets new standards of product classification according to criteria relevant to energy consumption. Zumtobel awards the eco+ label to products providing a special benefit for people and the environment. It is noteworthy that the criteria involved go far beyond technical data such as installed load. Eco+ luminaires are characterised by high lighting quality at low energy consumption, and they are made of environmentally compatible materials. The highly ambitious eco+ product label undercuts all existing national and international directives in terms of energy consumption by 20 %. Architects, designers and electricians can now identify particularly resource-saving products at a glance, even within a product range, since the eco+ label is assigned to individual articles.

The decisive factor for the environmental relevance of a lighting solution is the energy that is actually consumed. What is so special about the eco+ evaluation is its integral approach including all system components as well as the lighting quality of a luminaire. Eco+ involves three evaluation criteria: energy efficiency, environmental relevance and application quality.

Energy efficiency evaluates a luminaire’s performance in terms of economic efficiency. It takes into account both the light output ratio and the efficiency of lamps and ballasts. Efficiency is improved by factors such as a luminaire’s dimmability.

Environmental relevance evaluates the environmental compatibility of the materials used for the luminaire. Luminaires must be provided with halogen-free wiring, and emergency luminaires must be fitted with cadmium-free batteries to obtain the eco+ label.

Frequently, focussing on consumption levels alone does not consider a luminaire’s lighting quality to a sufficient extent. For this reason, minimum glare control levels have been defined for eco+, depending on the area of application. Quality enhancing light distribution features, such as indirect components, are specifically considered.

Limits are defined for each application category, so that special requirements can be taken into account. With this highly ambitious evaluation procedure, Zumtobel seeks to emphasise and significantly encourage an evaluation method that is based on both energy consumption and quality.
